A Unique Cult Plot!
4 out of 5 stars
A Unique Cult Plot!
1. 𝐀 𝐂𝐮𝐥𝐭 - I love a good cult story, so this grabbed my attention right away! A unique concept for a cult following with the albino twins and what they supposedly mean for the end of times!2. 𝐒𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 - Guys, seriously. I was able to deduce something quite early on in this one, and I was gagging at every point of mention throughout this one. I. Just. Can’t. Even….3. 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐞 𝟏𝟖𝟎° - Brynn’s attitude takes an abrupt shift in the middle of the story. It had me questioning whether or not I skipped a few chapters. I would have liked a more gradual change in this regard. It seemed to be more on the path of finding out the mystery of her childhood, but she was too trusting to find that truth.4. 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐛𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 - So many clues for Brynn to be as far away as possible. I don’t think any long-lost memories would ever be enough to make me go to the compound for answers. Especially when everyone keeps telling her they can’t wait for her to live there. Get. The. Eff. Out.5. 𝐅𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐬 - and both in high and low places. Brynn needed everyone in her corner, and thank goodness she had more than she bargained for! And, I could definitely feel that there will be a continuation of this story in the future! I can’t wait to hear about this trip that is planned!

I'm a huge fan of Steena Holmes and her stories and was so excited to read this one—another one of her fabulous thrillers. And this one did not disappoint.

There were so many unexpected twists to this story, things I couldn't even imagine, that sometimes I was sitting in shock at the direction the storyline was going. I'm sure if I went back and read it again, I would look at some plot points in a whole different light. Twenty-twenty hindsight, right? I may just do that, now that I know the whole story.

The climax to this story was pretty intense and I wasn't sure that it was going to end well. What an exciting ride this was. I loved The Twin and thoroughly enjoyed the intriguing characters and all the twists, turns, and secrets. I highly recommend it!

I have read many of Steena Holmes books. This is the first one that was kind of dark physiological thriller. This was very enjoyable even if I didn't know anything about the cult life. I really didn't realize this was about a cult and the life they live. I didn't know what to expect and had me a little creeped out but I just had to keep reading to find out what was going to happen and I wasn't disappointed. I will continue to read Steena Holmes books.

I wanted to love this book. At times. I think I did. But overall? It wasn’t for me.

The premise was super interesting: After the passing of her father, Brynn hopes to begin running her family’s funeral home. She has the education and training and how that her overbearing father is gone, nothing can stop her. Nothing except her twin brother, Bryce. Brynn and Bryce initially set out to run things together, but their father’s secret group (read: cult) demands more and more of Bryce’s attention. As it turns out, the cult, the funeral business, and their lives are linked in ways Brynn cannot begin to imagine.

Good, right?

And it was, except there is so much repetition and so many questions that are never answered.

First the repetition. Brynn wants things to be different. She hated Anthony, her father, and doesn’t want Bryce to be like him. She hates The Family. Over and over. At least once in every chapter, sometimes more. I get it; some of this is necessary exposition. But it started to become tiresome by chapter seven as the repetition continued.

What would have been helpful? Less repetition and more plot advancement. The cult thing is fascinating and I definitely wanted to know more. I was captivated by parts of the middle/end where more information is provided about the cult; however, information is held back to the very end. I don’t understand why Bryce, who supposedly loves his sister so much, doesn’t share information with her. How do they become so estranged? And why does Brynn, who is supposed to be this strong and independent woman, allow Bryce to get away with so much?

I don’t want to give anything away. Let it suffice to say this book has lots of potential; I just found myself too frustrated to really enjoy it.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I really enjoyed this book, although I will warn some readers they may end up going down a Google rabbit hole googling religious organizations near them. I think it is an important thing to be aware of - and I have nothing against organized religions! But this is a thought provoking topic, so be warned! The book is extremely well written, as are all of Steena Holmes’ novels!

Steena Holmes is a master at tightly-written description. She enables you to see the characters and surroundings, without inundating you with needless words - each word serves a purpose, some you won’t realize until later. (I love those “Ohhhh…!” moments where I’m flying backwards through the pages, knowing I want to reread a passage because of this newly revealed information, and the resounding “YES!” as I mentally high-five myself.)

THE TWIN is no exception. I admit being a tad nervous knowing I’d be reading this into the night; after all, the main characters own a funeral home. Would I need to sleep with the lights on?

The answer to that is… no. What kept me awake as I finished The Twin wasn’t fear or ghosts, it was the satisfaction of reading such a good book!

There are times in The Twin where Steena deftly takes you to the edge, sometimes the very very edge, but not so close that you wish for trigger warnings or a safety net. More of a “No no no no… ohhh. Phew!” roller coaster. A red herring that I created in my mind didn’t materialize, another phew!

I love suspense, and books that keep you guessing, layers revealed slowly and steadily. And if I’m wondering what happens next with the characters, even better. The Twin hit all the marks.

I received an eARC of this book; this is my honest, unsolicited review.

This was definitely a different kind of book for me. I was annoyed at the main character for not realizing what was going to happen to her way earlier in the book. It was good, though!! Certainly a twisted read!!

The character development was chaotic. It felt like two people wrote this.
This HAD the potential to be great, but fell far short of that.

It’s a great idea and concept for a novel, but could have been executed better. The characters were well developed but it it all concluded like a damp squib - and I didn’t find any surprising or shocking twist in the sad inevitable ending
