"Kids with an already adventurous palate will be delighted; picky eaters may turn up their noses, but hopefully they will be inspired by Jack's accomplishments to try at least one bite or maybe even two." - School Library Journal

Nice cookbook, lots of cute pictures of Jack and his story of fighting and surviving cancer is uplifting. But is this this a cookbook for children? I wonder if the 5 star reviews are for Jack and his story, not so much for a cookbook for children. If I were reviewing just Jack's story I'd rate 5 stars too. If this was a gourmet cookbook for adults written by a gifted child chef I'd give it 5 stars. But this is a cookbook for children. I mean children, not knowledgeable experienced miniature chefs.

Most of the recipes have a pretty long list of ingredients. For instance mac & cheese (page 41) has 13 ingredients including crumbled fresh goat cheese. Jack's perfect meat loaf (page 60) has 18 ingredients including 2 1/2 tablespoons chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley, 1 teaspoon Knorr Catdo de Tomate (that's how it's spelled in the book) soup base which I've never heard of or seen in a store. Vegetable and barley soup (page 44) has 15 ingredients including 3 tablespoons minced fresh flat leaf parsley, 2 teaspoons minced fresh basil. Mexican style turkey strips (page 56) has 14 ingredients. Tomato & herb penne pasta (page 47) has 10 ingredients. That recipe also calls for chopped fresh basil, chopped fresh flat leaf parsley, chopped fresh thyme, chopped fresh oregano and freshly grated parmesan cheese. The "twist it up" note says "using fresh herbs is always best but if you don't have any on hand you can substitute dried herbs". But there's no mention of the amount of dried herbs to sub for chopped fresh. Many of the recipes call for chopped fresh herbs.

White chicken chili calls for 17 ingredients including a jalepeno chile seeded and minced. Would a child know how to seed and mince a jalapeno?

I bought this cook book as a gift for my 13 year old grand daughter. She has made every recipe in the book in the past month, The recipes are easy to prepare and taste great. She cooks dinner several nights a week. Her 11 year old brother has also used the cook book and thinks cooking is great fun. It sure has helped my son and daughter-in-law who work out of the house. It has taught my grand children how to plan meals, make a grocery list and cook meals for the family. Great christmas gift or birthday gift.

I love this cookbook. There's no other way to say it. The flavors in it are healthy, flavorful and good.

Jack's recipes are healthy, easy, and delicious. From the chocolate cake to pasta carbonara, angel-hair pasta in tomato-basil sauce to Shepherd's pie, ALL dishes have earned the highest rating in our family: "Make this again, Mom!" (Note: my family would eat bread, cheese and cucumbers every day, if they had their way, so the request for more means a lot)

The cookbook is divided into 6 cooking sections (breakfast, lunch, school-night dinners, weekend meals, appetizers & side dishes, and sweets). This makes it easy to decide if I want a quick-n-easy meal, or something that takes a little longer. Additionally, there are helpful hints on every page, including "twist it up" suggestions on how to easily vary the recipe.

There is also a section about Jack and how he got involved with cooking. His story is a heart-touching one, and I wish him continuous good health on his journey.

The layout is colorful yet clear. The recipes are easy to read. The print is a good size for middle-age eyes, and there is enough white space on each page to make it relaxed reading. Additionally, the photographs are great!! Not only are there photos of almost every recipe, BUT there are terrific pix of Jack and his buddies, and gorgeous Redondo Beach.

Do I have a favorite recipe? All are keepers. The Rockin' Chili is amazing, the cupcakes were made for a school bake sale (and promptly sold out), chicken tacos are great. The chicken noodle soup is my child's favorite, my husband like the grilled ham & cheese, and I'm in for the spinach lasagne. As I type this, the chocolate cake is in the oven for a birthday party tomorrow....

Jack--when you grow up, I want to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner in your restaurant! :-)

I bought this cookbook for my 4 year old son for Christmas. The story of Jack, the pictures, and the recipes keep him interested in coming back day after day. We have made 4 or 5 recipes from the book and have a blast doing it together. This book is definitely going on my list to get everyone this year! Not only is it great for kids, but adults will love the recipes too! Have fun cooking!!

I became acquainted with this young man at a "Books and Authors" luncheon and was so moved by his story and charmed by his personality. I bought two at the event and have since bought two more. This book is well illustrated and clear; it is a perfect gift for young people learning to cook and for cooks of any age. This is a wonderful book and an admirable young man.

I saw Jack on TV and thought of my 9 yr old grandson. I purchased the book, and looked over the recipes. It was written by a kid for kids and I think any child could learn from this boy. My grandson loves to help in the kitchen when he can. Plus the proceeds go to a great cause.
