Kirkus Reviews calls Neal's writing, "persistently riveting. Masterly."
Award-winning, USA Today bestselling social worker turned author Toby Neal grew up on the island of Kaua`i in Hawaii. Neal's police procedurals with multicultural detective Lei Texeira and a host of colorful side characters, explore the crimes and issues of Hawaii and are so popular that they've spawned a licensed fan fiction world on Amazon.

Toby Neal has put together a cast of characters in the Lei Crime Series that feels like family to her devoted readers. Lei has grown so much over the series. More of the puzzle that is Lei's life is coming together to reveal a strength that surprises not only the reader, but Lei herself. Can she finally bid farewell to the demons from her past, and have the future that she longs for? As a reader, I have come to love Lei Texeira, and feel a real sense of pride in her accomplishments. At one point in "Twisted Vine," Lei is told, "You have a heart, and that's a good thing in a cop." A very good thing indeed.
If you are new to the Lei Crime Series, I urge you to start at the beginning with "Blood Orchids," and follow through the series in order. You will not only find a treat for your senses as you experience the islands of Hawaii through the eyes of a true local, but you will fall in love with a cast of characters who you will want to keep close to your heart.
A long time ago, I was sent to Hawaii to fix some problems as part of my job, and my wife and I vacationed there a few years later. The author's sense of place, people, dialogue, etc are spot on. While I enjoy the book, I love the portions about Hawaii.
Back to the book: I like the development of characters throughout the series. Because I'm reading the eight books in the series in order, I can not rate one book or one story since they mesh.
The author has done a great job and her books are fun to read. No, these are neither deep books, nor are they a travelog, but they provide a brief escape from the daily live lead by all of us and provide us with a different time and place - escape fiction.
When you read her books, read the about author section at the end of each since each of these is slightly different and provides some insight into who the author worked with on the plot details and other aspects of her writing. I really have enjoyed these one to two page sections and think you will too.
I was on O'ahu and Kaua'i visiting family while reading this book, being in the same cities and locations made reading Twisted Vine even more exciting, especially while snorkeling in Kailua, Tunnels beaches and reading on the warm Hawaiian sands. Mahalo nui loa for another great read...A hui hou!
As always, I love the setting! Living in Hawaii (Oahu) is such a privilege and a pleasure and I I am reminded of how lucky I am when I delve into Lei's world. The familiar landscape adds to the feeling of Lei being an old friend. Here's to hoping I run into her downtown one day!
I highly recommend each of Toby Neal's books and I must confess that this one came with a bit of a letdown....I have no idea when number six will be released! Until then, I will bask in the Hawaii sun, sand and surf while I watch for the email notification of a new book to purchase!
