I've been using the Twitch app on my Fire TV for years and it hasn't been without its problems, but the new build released in late March 2019 is absolutely awful.

The UI has been overhauled for the worse. The main screen doesn't offer any content to watch until about halfway down the screen as the top is filled with a low-quality live preview of whatever you have highlighted. Given that the individual channel previews have room for a live preview screenshot, it would be much more useful for the video preview to be there instead of taking up half of the screen. Additionally, the text is far too small and is illegible on most TV sizes and at most distances. The only redeeming aspect is that the list of favorite games is now functional, having been broken for years where it would previously just disappear 99.9% of the time you tried to look through it. Though again, having been broken for literally years, it's hard to give too much praise to something that should have been fixed a long time ago. I also don't really like that it offers you streams you didn't watch all of before offering your list of favorite channels.

Additionally, the app now suffers from absolutely terrible stuttering and buffering issues. Having been watching a stream downstairs on my PC with no problems, I went upstairs to continue watching on my Fire TV and would find it buffering every 2-5 minutes. This has been consistent on a nightly basis since updating to the new app version and does not occur on other Twitch sources or on the old version. The Fire TV has an Ethernet connection, not WiFi. This is a major problem for a platform that lives and dies by its collection of live streaming content.

There are also problems with playback of archived streams. I've seen some people say theirs play slow, but mine play fast, resulting in a higher shifted pitch for all sound. The fast forward and rewind functions are also significantly worse than they used to be. They now do not increase in speed by holding down the button and start at painfully slow amounts (rewind's default is 1x speed, I believe fast forward's is 1.5x?) and the button must be hit over and over to increase the speed. The play button must be hit in order to resume play, which was not the case with the old version. The top end speed is also uselessly slow for skimming through marathon streams that last several hours as it doesn't move nearly fast enough to skim the bar in any useful amount, unlike the previous speeds offered in the old version. It also has a problem where stopping the fast forwarding or rewinding won't stop it where you hit play, instead being offset by some seemingly arbitrary amount, meaning you have to do constant fast forwards or rewinds to get where you want to be, hitting the button several times to deal with the awful starting speeds each time.

For all of the minor problems (and the major one of the favorite game list not working) that the previous version had, my experience with the new one thus far is that it is a significantly worse user experience in almost every conceivable way, and it's hard to believe it was thoroughly tested in any real capacity prior to a production release, or that if it was then no one cared about any of the reported defects and usability issues enough to fix them. Absolutely terrible application that ruined the viewing experience for one of my most used services.

When I first got this app in July 2015 it worked perfectly. No sort of loading errors or anything. Very very slowly, I noticed the app had been getting worse. A little freezing here and there. Sometimes, very rarely, a stream wouldnt load. By September, I couldnt watch a stream without the starting adds crashing and the streams themselves not even loading sometimes. It was then that I noticed that the people I have followed that I actually watch... I dont get any sort of notification of when they are going live. By this time in November, I can't actually get any single stream to play for more than five seconds at a time before freezing for a minimum of one minute to indefinitely. I was especially upset at this since I was a mod and admin on one stream, and I took it very seriously. By now the app freezes my kindle every other time I try opening it. And I just now realized that I cant get the twitch app off my device. I have deleted it five times to no success. Its still on my kindle somehow. As for when I was trying desperately to get the app to work again...

At this point, I have tried everything I could to get this app to work again. I have rebooted my kindle fire hd 7, I have done a factory reset on it, and I have even attempted to get on it from my laptop. But it just doesnt play any video on there, and it locks up the laptop after about a minute, and nits a very expensive laptop made to handle a lot more than a simple live stream.

I know for a fact that this app isnt actually broken, because so many other people I know are using it still, and they have never had a single problem with it. Is there anyone out there who might know what the problem is and how I can fix it? At least on my kindle? I still feel obligated to go back to modding that stream after all this time of not being able to watch or even read the chat to mod anything...
