I can apply what I have read to using twitter. Thanks to Eric Bieller, twitter is much more enjoyable
By the time any of these how-to books hits the stands the scene has changed dramatically..What had been working becomes obsolete.
Here's something interesting I got out of the book. There are several people who will Follow you on Twitter and then when you Follow them back they will drop you. I know this because I learned how to know when someone drops you on Twitter from this book. I notice there is a trend of people doing this who have thousands of followers but only follow a few. So when they dump me after following them I dump them back! Ha ha! Take that shallow unethical Twitter Follower seeking Twitter people. Um...okay....Anyway.....
I am now a Social Butterfly on Twitter! Sounds cheesy, but it's true! :0)
I feel the content would be more suitable as an adjunct to a "How To" guide. You know- first give me the tools and then show me the right way to use them. That would've felt like a more complete experience. I picked up the book thinking it's for the total novice, so felt a bit disappointed.
But in all fairness, the author makes it clear at the very beginning, that the book is for those who already have some experience with Twitter.
What I did find lacking however was clear instructions on how to drive the thing. For those skilled in navigating the byroads of cyberspace, fine, but for the benefit of us more easily confused souls I would have liked more detailed instructions. All in all though, I found 'The Twitter Effect' very helpful and a tool all Tweeters should read.
I enjoyed looking at the effects of how this cultural phenomenon works, and the unspoken rules that govern the site. It is a good look at all the things you didn't know and probably wouldn't unless you are 16.
The Verdict: It'll make you sound smart when you talk about what you are reading, and it will help you be smart when you are dealing with social media in the workplace and as an individual.
Eric is honest, he isn't an expert but his suggestions are pure. They make for a more thoughtful and real Twitter user. His methods won't score you a thousand followers, but it will make your followers real followers and not just another inflated ego stat.
Read this book. It's short, honest, and sure to make you a better Twitter user in the right way, not the ego way.
