Prentice Hall has made a major error in judgment allowing this book to be made available in facsimile (copied) format, especially at the price they are charging. The subtle details of image processing techniques are, in most cases, masked by the poor copy quality. Unfortunately, many college courses are requiring this book and no original hardbound copies seem to be available. If you are only interested in theory, this is a good book. If you are looking for image quality samples, look somewhere else.

There are many "image" processing books out there. But what makes this book unique is providing profound knowledge about 2-D signal processing. Most of image processing books just contain fancy images and quick-n-dirty equations for hit-n-run people. But this book provides various algorithms, design methods, and illustrations in terms of both of "2-D signal" and "image" processing. Chapters for filter design are good examples. Unlike most image processing books, it gives comparative illustrations and reference regarding many combinations of FIR, IIR, separable, non-separable, and zero-phase filtering as well as their basic implementation methods. This book is NOT for undergrads or DSP begineers. For those who need more theoritcal backgrounds in 2-D signal and image processing to solve given problems, I surely believe this book quenches the quriosities.
Also, Dr. Lim is one of world-famous DSP scholars after his advisor, Dr. Oppenheim, who actually "created" the world of DSP.

This is a good choice for the main text of a graduate course that extends digital signal processing to images and other two-dimensional data. It is a bit dated in its content now and must be supplemented to cover more recent topics such as subbands and wavelets and video signal processing. The book requires a solid mathematical background.

I read this book. It gives full math treatment of 2 dimensional DFT, Z-transform, FFT and so on. Excellent book.

I have used this book in my undergrad and now in my graduate studies. It has been a part of my graduate curriculum and I use it quite often to look up things I get stuck with. It is indispensable for someone who is allied with the filed of Imaging/Image Processing/Signal processing. Those looking for NLP, Acoustics etc. may look for more apt text - but this one is a bible for S&I Processing
