Two Orphan Vampires (US Limited Edition 4K UHD)

Director: Jean Rollin

Cast: Alexandra Pic, Isabelle Teboul, Natalie Perrey, Brigitte Lahaie, Tina Aumont

Originally released in 1997, Two Orphan Vampires (Les Deux orphelines vampires) finds Jean Rollin, the master of the fantastique, returning to the vampire genre with which he had made his name.

By day, blind orphans Henriette and Louise seem to be the picture of innocence. But when darkness falls, their sight returns, and they wander the streets of Paris, encountering the city’s strange nocturnal denizens, and leaving a trail of corpses in their quest for fresh blood.

Featuring startling performances from novice leads Alexandre Pic and Isabelle Teboul, alongside Tina Aumont (Modesty Blaise) and Rollin regulars Nathalie Perrey (The Shiver of the Vampires) and Brigitte Lahaie (Fascination), Two Orphan Vampires is a beautiful and melancholy summation of Rollin’s unique and arresting style.

    Great Highly Recommended!

Well, there was lots of blood, but most of the movie is art - showing areas of rural France and Paris, or someplace that may be Paris, as I don't really know where the scenes were shot. Some scenes are even in New York city.
The two women selected to be the vampire sisters don't look anything like each other, but they do a good job with what they were given and look very nice, nude or clothed. The DVD also has interviews with the two actresses and Jean Rollin himself. One of the actresses can even speak English and her English is very cute! Yes, there is violence and some gore and lots of weird creatures and girls in school uniforms but much of the pleasure of this film was in the craft of the camera. It was just so lovely to watch and listen to.

Great movie! Jean Rollins' best ever! Watch the first few minutes and the last 10 minutes if you are in a hurry! Jean Rollins joins his horror treatment in themes in properly this time....as fantasy models and legends juxtaposed to the orphan child duo lost between worlds! This is without question his best film. And the last 7 minutes make for one the best cinema endings I've ever seen. Perfect ending....perfectly done...

Not as good as I expected, although it is well directed, and I this the actress's did a good job. This film tells the story of two blind orphans, who see just fine at night. They are Vampires, and in the course of the film they meet up with other creatures of the Supernatural, as they seek to evade the hunters following them.

1.0 out of 5 stars Völlig langweilig
Reviewed in Germany on September 24, 2017

4.0 out of 5 stars Les Deux Orphelines Vampires/Two Orphan Vampires (1997)
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 3, 2015
French director Jean Rollin worked on the storyline to for this film whilst undergoing lengthy dialysis treatment. The extra time enforced on the project results in one of his most polished work, in my view. We have Louise and Henriette (Alexandra Pic and Isabelle Taboul), two girls (sisters possibly) who are blind by day and fully sighted vampires by night. The reason seems to be that they are Aztec Gods, or descendants thereof, and as such, can never really die.

Much is made of their night-time activities. Their blue-tinged journeys are either seen as sinister hunts or the mischievous naughtiness of two young scamps. This balance between schoolgirl killer and playful sinner is achieved very well. The actresses exude an other-wordly charm that makes them strangely appealing, despite their misdeeds.

Of course, there is the opportunity to pick out plot holes - why did the girls kill the good Dr Dennery after he provided them with a home, and whom they had just convinced of their good intentions? And why did the passer-by in the cemetery, after noticing they were not really blind, assume them to be demons from hell and threaten to beat them with a stick? – but why bother? It would, as always, be like trying to dissect a dream, a place where the usual rules either don’t exist, or simply don’t matter.
