As someone who has spent a bit of time in Bulgaria, I found Jones' book to be a faithful representation of all the quirks that make Bulgaria fascinating, maddening, and ultimately rewarding. Though unafraid to admit that Bulgaria is far from perfect, Jones treats his subject with compassion and even affection, and the result is a winning account of the ultimate outsider trying to make sense of his surroundings, surroundings that are foreign in every sense of the word.
The basketball portions of Two Seasons are thoroughly entertaining, and Jones does a masterful job of weaving them in with well-researched but easily digestible bits of Bulgarian history as well as his own keen observations of modern-day Bulgaria. Though his basketball players are a collective riot, there's no mistaking that the star of the book is Bulgaria itself. Perhaps I was wrong in calling this a sports book at all; rather, it's a nuanced and honest appraisal of a country still struggling to find its identity.
It's an extremely promising debut from a truly talented writer, as the seemingly disparate topics of high school basketball and post-communism Bulgaria couldn't possibly inhabit the same pages in the care of lesser hands. I very much look forward to seeing what Jones puts out next.
Basketball fans will particularly appreciate Andy's skill at calling a game. Seriously, there are parts that have you on the edge of your seat! You will savor the wins. You will lament the losses. You will empathize for the intense practice and hard lessons along the way. Andy's book will help you appreciate what is best about the game itself.
I like a book that teaches me something about life, about myself, about the best of who we can be. This story covers a lot of ground.
With every page I turned in the book came something unexpected--talk about culture shock to the max! The reader is thrown into the unique and secluded Bulgarian culture, and Jones' clear and entertaining writing style makes the reader experience his journey as a basketball coach in Bulgaria. In the book, the inclusion of Bulgarian culture helps define Bulgarian basketball just as Bulgarian basketball helps define Bulgarian culture. The building of ideas not only about Bulgarian culture and basketball but about teamwork, honesty, and life in general in "Two Seasons In the Bubble" is phenomenal.
The Bulgarian basketball players are characterized in such a way that I felt like I personally knew them. An emotional attachment to the basketball team is inevitable and had me laughing and even crying while reading the book.
The truths revealed and ideas conveyed throughout are so relatable and thoughtfully expressed--you do not even need any interest in basketball or Bulgaria to love the book. It's witty, wholehearted, and a must read.
"Two Seasons In the Bubble" is impossible to put down or ever forget.
