of 'that gripping thriller that will keep you up all night' description. I read until midnight and then it's lights out time for me. However, I woke up Saturday morning and picked it up again; read until I had to get something to eat. Did the things that had to be done; fixed a good dinner; went back to the book; and on Sunday morning I decided I would finish this book today. And I did.....and finally everything came together. I loved Beth and originally thought Gloria was totally "living in the past". All in all, I fell in love with this book and am already buying up books by Laura Wolfe. She knows how to make you 'think' and knows how to make characters seem real. I have 20,000 books on my Kindle and seldom write a review as that would make me type all the time. But this book will make you want to give others a chance to enjoy a book so well written.
I also liked how each chapter focused on one of the main people and going backward in the time-line was helpful to get the history of the characters.
It kept me guessing right up to the end and it was a total surprise!
The nice way she pulled it all together was brilliantly done.
All in all, one of the best reads all summer!!
Beth’s story is interspersed starting from before she moves to Gloria’s land with her tiny house while on assignment. What do we really know about her? Is Gloria truly safe in her company? Beth shares some of her own widowhood story with Gloria. She is also friendless. Can these ladies share something and work through it together? Or is there something else going on here? I get a feeling not all is well.
I like that this story brings out Gloria’s growing wisdom and independence. Acceptance through love and independence through questioning. Beth is much the same as you will figure out. The author gives us quite a number of scary twists and turns all the way to the very end. Strength can be found within, independence through trusting yourself, and love from pulling away from preconception.
After the murder of a young woman, widow Gloria Flass finds she longs for company. When Beth Ramsey, a travel writer, contacts Gloria about renting space to park her tiny home, she readily agrees. A few days later Gloria rents her garage apartment to a “starving” artist named Joe.
Perhaps her loneliness was the reason she didn’t do background checks on either of them. Gloria soon learns free-spirited Beth is also a widow. Despite their age difference, the two soon become friends.
When a second young woman, whom Beth had befriended turns up missing and is later found murdered, Gloria believes she’d made a mistake in trusting Beth.
The book is writing in first person, the chapters alternating between Gloria’s and Beth’s point of view. The author throws in enough twists and turns that kept me guessing the murderer’s identity until the end.
This was my first time to read one of Laura Wolfe’s novels, but it won’t be my last.
