The Tykesbykes (now Stampede) Sprinter 16" hits the sweet spot in terms of price and quality. You can spend a lot more and maybe if you're a family of hardcore cyclists you may want to, but for a nice 'heirloom' first bike to go through our 3 kids the Sprinter is perfect.
As soon as he was on the Sprinter you could see he was in a better riding position, more stable and more confident. Also he likes having a 'mountain' bike like daddy's!
Finally exemplary customer support. The front wheel has a slight wobble to it and Stampede offered to replace it without hesitation.
Be aware that the shifter, while not a grip shift, isn't a trigger shifter either. Shifter gets smashed when kids wreck, it's in a bad spot and is plastic.
Had to swap the shifter and brake lever around (backwards out of the box).
Chain stay is very long, ok unless kid likes to do tricks.
Cranks are ~140mm
Chain ring is a 40 tooth integrated with crank, ended up replacing cranks and chainring to get down to a 32 tooth chain ring for a 1:1 final drive in the lowest gear for climbing. Even after doing this the gears aren't low enough for doing real hill climbs off road. Really needs a triple up front, haven't tackled that yet, might require a wider bottom bracket shaft.
Pretty happy with the bike, it's not quite up to the job for me, but the other kids bike that does what I need is $1000. Tough to get a good kids mountain bike on a budget.
