All in all while this is yet another solid cookbook from Tyler, I will say that most of the recipes just do not appeal to me (and I am not referring to the baby food ones). They just seems a little lack-luster and boring. Maybe I've come to expect too much? But these are all great and pretty much fool-proof recipes if you have some cooking skills, don't get me wrong; great, easy-to-follow recipes for those with some cooking skills that produce satisfying results, just not tripping my trigger much. As I said, it helps if you have some cooking skills and food/cooking knowledge (which I do, I am not intimidated by anything here, maybe that is why I find them kind of boring?!). While the recipes themselves are extremely do-able, I can see a beginner being put off by this. But if you have some cooking skills and would like some basic solid recipes, this might be worth a look. As seems to be the usual, his recipes generally are usually pretty healthy and wholesome, so that is why I often turn to his recipes/cookbooks and this one again is no exception. Great, solid recipes.
I have been cooking for years and seen many cookbooks, so that might be why this cookbook just seems kind of 'boring' to me. But again, that said, it is a good solid cookbook with time-tested, timeless recipes. All in all I feel these are pretty basic recipes but still require some cooking skills and food knowledge.
If you want a good, solid, time-tested recipe cookbook with recipes that are no-frills and that actually work and are pretty easy to complete and that the entire family will likely enjoy, then this is probably a book you would enjoy. The photos of course are spot-on perfection and beautiful! I like that he includes a photo of the completed dish and not un-necessary recipes like a picture of a block of cheese or a serving spoon.
A few of the recipes are a little out of my league, I mean who has time (and the desire) to cook homemade pasta on a week night? Some of the tools/techniques he uses are little advanced, when I thought this book was supposed to be his more casual non-professional-kitchen recipes. I was surprised to find the baby food section, which is actually relevant to me right now with a new baby, but that was a surprise to find and I wonder how other buyers would respond to that. I wonder if I didn't have a baby right now, would I be disappointed at the amount of space the homemade baby food section took up? It's almost as if it didn't belong in this book, but rather he published a small baby-food book or something.
I really love this book and Tyler Florence, some of the recipes I just disregard, but thats the same with any cookbook. Not every cookbook will be front to back perfect for you and your family. I love the stories, the introductions, and the photos.
