Kilter was introduced in Stygian, as a Scar with a hairpin trigger temper, and a man that truly hates people. When he spent some quality time(not) with Rayne, a woman he meets at her evil husband’s compound while trying to break another Scar out of captivity, he never thought he would see her again. But he made a promise to her, so he goes back for her. Rayne has been in captivity since she was ten years old, when her parents died. She ended up in the compound that does horrible testing on paranormal creatures. She’s almost broken and suffers from anorexia. Meeting Kilter was the first good thing that has happened to her since she lost her parents.
The story of these two and how they eventually fall for each other would have made for a story all on its own, but the author introduces us to a young witch, Abby, and another Scar, Damien. These two end up with major problems after Abby tastes a drop of vampire blood, while drunk. Liam, the vampire, wants Abby for himself, and Abby wont be able to resist him with his blood in her, making her his slave forever. However, Abby has an even bigger secret and Damien, her recent fling, finds himself in the fight of his life to save her from this fate.
The book jumps between these two story threads and also weaves in some smaller ones. All the characters from the first book are back. We continue to get more information on Waleron and his back story, and more about his feelings for Delara. Some of the book is told from both of their perspectives. Jedrick, the Scar I had thought of as comic relief, is a bit more serious this time around. I will be interested to get his story at some point-soon hopefully.
I continued to enjoy the authors world building. In addition to the one drop of vampire blood and what it can cause, she also included another new group of supernatural characters known as CWO’s(Center World Others)that originate from the center of the earth. They are insects and take over recently deceased human bodies. Scars are tasked with ridding the world of these creatures as just one of their warrior duties.
If you are an adult urban fantasy/paranormal romance fan, this series is one you shouldn’t overlook. I enjoyed all the characters, the premise, the romance, and of course the world building. Good Read!
So let's start off by saying Tyrant is Book #2 in the Scars of the Wraiths series. Now while each book centers around a different couple it is imperative that you read Book #1, Stygian first so that you can follow all the ins and outs that are going on in Tyrant. And you know that nashoda Rose means it, because not only does she advise you of this in the blurb, but she does right before the book starts. I absolutely LOVED that!
So the main couple in Tyrant is Kilter and Rayne. Kilter is closed off, he is an ass, he trusts no one. That is until he came face to face with Rayne and something about her buried deep within him and wouldn't let go. He can't get her out of his mind and so he goes back to rescue her. See Rayne, she's in a compound. At this point Kilter doesn't know the whole story, but he knows he wants to get her away from there. He never should have left her to begin with. Just know that the books are each complete, they just compliment each other and build off of each other.
Kilter's protective instincts toward Rayne go into overdrive from the moment he has her n his arms. He can't explain them, but she awakens feelings in him he hasn't felt in forever. Rayne has been kept secluded since she was just a child. Her spirit is broken. Her ability to trust is broken. She needs to learn how to fight for herself all over again. Will she be able to trust in the feelings that are developing between her and Kilter? Will she be able to rust period? Will she learn to fight again?
So while this may be Kilter and Rayne's story we get so much more than just their POV. You have POVs coming at you from every direction. Tyrant is a very layered story and in order to get the most out of it we are given different perspectives and different pieces to the puzzle. I happen to love getting multiple perspectives. I love well developed side characters and you get that here in spades!
I was drawn into this story. Into all of the action, drama and twists and turns that develop. But also into the personal stories and growth that develops amongst the characters. I also really appreciated the lore of the paranormal world. There is so much that is going on there and I enjoyed the complexity of it (and having a glossary in the back always helps to refresh you if you start getting confused ;) )
If you are a fan of paranormal romance, if you like hot books, if you like books that are packed full of story, twists, turns and characters, then don't miss out in this series!
I received a complimentary copy of Tyrant in exchange for an honest review.
Kilter!!! What can I say except that there is just so much there!!! He's growly and closed-off, says what he means and means what he says, and he could care less what anyone thinks about that until Rayne. He has been through so much in the many years he's been alive, thinking his clan had broken his trust. But when he rescues Rayne he knows he needs help, without it she may die.
Rayne. Wow, there are so many things about her that will shock the reader. Although in the beginning her character may seem weak and broken we soon see that there is a core strength about her that should have been completely broken. I absolutely loved watching her come back.
One of the best things about this series is that, while each book focuses on specific couples, we get to meet so many diverse characters. Can't wait until the next book!!!! This will be Belara and Waleron's story. SO MUCH story there!!!!
