This review was written with the assistance and expert opinion of my Pop, a Scuba Divemaster and certified dive technician. We've been snorkeling and diving all over the world, and owned many grades of equipment. U.S. Divers, a division of Aqualung, manufacturers moderately-priced, good quality products that are a sound choice for the casual enthusiast. This particular set of fins and mask rates as follows:
MASK: The tempered glass is great and we loved the side-glass that expands your view. We give 1/4 star deduction for the lack of a comfort strap; strange since other U.S. Diver snorkels feature one. This more basic strap caught on my hair. The emergency whistle is fantastic--invaluable when we're trying to be heard over crashing surf.
FINS: We actually found these to be a bit stiff; 1/4 star deduction here. They may make your ankles sore or stiff after long periods of use. My Dad felt these fins are a good idea for kids who might not feel aches and pains as easily as older folks. As to the sizing, they fit both my Dad's size 11 feet and my own size 8. Be advised that the both of use have wide feet--if you have slender feet these fins might slide around on you a bit. The adjustable straps are terrific; very easy to use and sturdy. And they're kinda pretty.
CASE: Well made, incredibly useful. Having a bag to pack clean clothes and a place to pack dirty ones at the end of a day at the beach is wonderful. The bag is well-designed and everything fits inside perfectly.
In conclusion, recommended with only a few reservations. This kit is nice enough to give you a great snorkeling experience, but not so expensive it will break the bank if you lose part of it on vacation. All in all, rating:
UPDATE: In answer to questions regarding the snorkel, my Dad says it's perfectly acceptable for the price point.
Especially fond of the snorkel, which worked flawlessly. At the surface, or after diving, we *never* had water in our air supply. Goggles are good; could have been more water-tight--but I also have a beard, the water entry may not be the fault of the goggles. My wife had no problem with water in the goggles, but she doesn't dive--she stays at the surface. Wonderful panoramic view! Flippers/fins worked fine. They seem to size larger than expected, my foot measures 7.5 on the Brannock, the small/medium fins were adjusted almost as tight as they go (but they did fit OK.)
I do appreciate the fabric bag. My wife doesn't wear fins, we have two snorkels, two masks, one set of fins, and some accessories tucked into the single bag--works great.
That being said - how does it work and fit? The new "patent pending" snorkel has a water purge value at the bottom, which does a great job of keeping water from building up and choking you. It does not, however, prevent water from getting in at all times. There is bound to be water entering at times (turning of the head, a wave hits you, etc.) and when that occurs, a quick exhale and the water purges out. Not bad. The top of the snorkel is fairly innovative as well - as it includes a "close valve" that will automatically close when you dive down, keeping water out of the snorkel when you surface. Handy, but again, not perfect. It does far better than not having this feature though - so a plus. The final little "bonus" on the snorkel is an emergency whistle attached right next to the mouthpiece. If you happen to get into a situation and need help, surface, move the whistle out, and blow. The emergency, ear piercing sound will certainly get someone's attention.
The mask fits my large face well and has a "purge" value below the nose as well. It works fairly well, but I am still getting used to "blowing" out air through my nose to purge my mask when snorkeling. Not a normal habit, to be sure. The "panoramic" angle is more hype than reality. While it does give you more side-to-side viewing, the glass viewing under water kind of limits your ability to see things out of the corner of your eye anyway.
The fins are fairly comfortable. No rubbing, no slipping off during the swim, no problems noted. The blades seem fairly sturdy and provide good motion through the water. As is noted on the insert, larger feet may not fit entirely in the "sock" and smaller feet may have to really tighten the band, with toes potentially poking out the bottom (within the range of this particular size kit). I'm right towards the top end of the max for this size and my feet fit just fine. My heel does poke out the back, but only just - and it doesn't affect me at all.
Overall, the kit is a great value. The bag just makes things easier. The only thing that would make this even better - a slighter larger bag w/more pockets to store other snorkeling gear (water camera, knife, etc). There is a pocket on the front, but I would not put too many things in there, as it isn't all that large. If you like water sports or are just interested in learning how to snorkel, this is an excellent kit for the price, with quality made pieces.
