The Last Can Opener You'll Ever Need

Without a doubt the simplest and most dependable machine ever created next to the lever & fulcrum; two moving parts... that's it!

I still have the P-38 I got as a kid 40 years ago at an Army Navy surplus store and it still works without a problem. It was shiny when new but over the years it developed a nice warm patina with age but can still open a can in a few seconds with no effort. For the last 30 years it's traveled with me all over the world on my keyring opening up cans when needed without complaint. I have gotten several comments over the years from newbies who don't know what it is who immediately want to know where to get one and from old salts who know exactly what it is and proudly show you theirs and share a colorful story behind the situation to when and where they got theirs.

I never bothered getting a P-51 because the P-38 worked just fine but I got these by chance when looking for other items here and couldn't pass up the bargain.

I've used it as a flathead and phillips head screwdriver (using a corner) and as a simple wedge from time to time in addition to opening cans and it still works flawlessly without any damage. I thought it would've rusted out years ago but to this day 40 years later, not a speck of rust anywhere on it. I'm sure you can use it for other things and I'm sure most of you have, it's just a very handy tool to have that takes up less space than a key on a keyring... can't beat it.

I remember my uncle giving me some of the P-38's when I was a kid that he had when he was in the Army. He said he had a ton of them because every C-Ration came with one. Now here we are 30+ years later and they still make them! These are very handy to have around the house in case of an emergency or for camping. I didn't know they made the larger version, the P-51. I can open a can of beans with the P-38 like no one's business LOL. The P-51 is even easier to use due to the larger size. So stock up while you can and support a Veteran and throw a handful in the junk drawer, in the car, on your key ring or your tackle/tool box because you don't know how handy these are until the lights go out and you're in need of a can opener!

What is a P-38/P-51?

It is a small piece of steel with a hooked blade that flips outward. That's it. But it's more than that. It's a can opener.

These can openers are Small, Simple, Reliable, and Amazing. I have used one of these (the P-51) for many years. You may think "what if i lose these?". If you keep them close, and have a specific spot to keep them, you won't. Outdoors is a little more difficult. However, these are well worth it. Besides, even if you lose these amazing little things, you can always buy some more. I had mine since i was a boy scout. I still keep it on my key ring wherever i go. Its been battered. Its been abused. It's been misused. Its older than me, rusty as heck, and looks discolored from when i accidentally burned it (long story involving bug spray, a lighter, and some Cheetos). HOWEVER, despite all this, it STILL serves it's purpose with flying colors. Its a can opener. It opens cans. It is built like a tank, and it will always be by my side on all my outdoor adventures.

Also, These are LEGIT. These are NOT Chinese knockoffs. These are NOT cheap and flimsy. It's a real Shelby Co. P-38/P-51

A word of Warning, however: I ordered this expecting 20 pieces. a set of 10 P-38 and a set of 10 P-51. I only got the 10 P-51 can openers. I had only purchased this product for just the p-51's anyways. so I'm content. but i want my money's worth and i have not gotten the p-38's. I think it might be a single isolated mistake on the seller's part, and I'm too cheap and lazy to return it (why would i return the only thing from the purchase that i wanted?!). But still, it is just annoying. I'm still content with the seller. I have bought their stuff in the past, and I've never had issues like this before. They are amazing! But i got what i wanted. just not what i paid for. Hence the 4 stars. The product is definitely worth 5 stars on its own. And i would LOVE for you to try em out.

I host a food pantry for Veterans who are experiencing homelessness or are just having a rough go of it. I like to keep these handy to give out with canned goods - as canned goods are difficult to eat without a can opener. These are really high quality - genuine Shelby Co, made in the USA. I wouldn't feel right giving a service member any cheap thing made in China. That being said, I also don't have a huge can opener budget. These fit both bills as they come in around fifty cents a pop. These do have a little hole so that they can be put on a key ring. They're also really pretty easy to use and the majority of your older service members are familiar with them anyway. I suggest giving the larger ones to older folks, or folks that have arthritis - they're a bit easier to use.
I also keep these in my emergency kits.

The Opener Used in Military "C-Rats"

I spend a good amount of time on the road and many times carry my own food. I've always been frustrated by cans with no "pop-tops" on them because I can't carry a full-sized opener. A few days ago it occurred to me that what I needed was what we had in the Marine Corps in Vietnam to open cans of "C" rations or "C-Rats" as we called them. In the packs was a can opener some called a "church key" or P-38. I searched for this type of opener and found it right here on Amazon.

The P-38 is the exact opener included in our C-Rats. I'd never heard of a P-51 before, but it is the exact same thing as a P-38 but almost twice as large and easier to handle. I've stowed two P-51s in my suitcase and two P-38s in my equipment bag as backups. Ten of each type are in the package.

This opener is proof you can't improve on perfection.
