I've been a Lukas Novak fan since Bea Schirmer's first Nordic Noir mystery MATCH GAMES, which is actually the third book in the overarching HemiHelix Effect series. THE LAST CONVERT, a novella, came out later, but is the first book chronologically. I thought the time jump and slightly eccentric numbering system would confuse me, but the stories mesh so well, I got a lot of pleasure at going back and seeing how Schirmer's disheveled, slightly out-of-step hero came into being.
This satisfying reading experience holds with NO U-TURN ON DEAD END STREET. This third publication is book 5 in the chronology and it thrusts us into the aftermath of a drama that hasn't happened yet for us, but that has torn Lukas's world to shreds. Having morphed from good guy into killer, he's running from authorities out to catch him, from a shadowy nemesis out to kill him, and from his own shattered sense of self.
Schirmer's style is visceral and gritty but with lots of intelligence and style. She doesn't use shock or gore to take the place of a sound plot and carefully developed characters. Her unusual use of her series timeline adds a surreal, disjointed quality to the story that enhances the sense of danger and gives us an opening directly into Lukas's experience as he delves into ever muddier, ever murkier places.
After reading NO U-TURN ON DEAD END STREET, I'm waiting with gleeful impatience for HUN HUNTER, so I can see for myself exactly how Lukas Novak got himself into such deadly straits.
By Bea Schirmer
Despite some objectionable language, I was hooked in the story from the begining. This is the first story I have read by this author. I had no idea what to expect and I found a well imagined story with twists and a great surprise for me. Plus a chuckle. If you don’t mind the language it was a very good read. I will read some of the earlier books from this series.
