I have owned the Asus for about a week. Setup was easy (not much 'fluff-ware'), boosting the RAM to 8GB was as easy as could be, sound is more than adequate, and overall performance and speed are all I had anticipated. Watchng HD on its bright and clear LCD is really a pleasure. Battery life is better than most at about seven hours. Keyboard and trackpad are both very responsive and feel very nice to the touch.
One can easily spend much more, but this Asus offers a great bang-for-the-buck. Well worth considering.
Pros: Graphics card is really decent and works with most modern games (I've tried COD, Wolfenstein ET, MW2, Maple Story), realistic 6.5 hour battery life (on battery save mode), beautiful chiclet keyboard with blue accents, sturdy trackpad, overall sleek look when cleaned regularly, weighs just over 4 pounds, easy access to hardware for upgrades
Cons: Overall, the monitor in general is not good quality. I'm not familiar with asus laptops (so I'm not sure if all of their laptops have this feature) but the monitor feels cheap and wasn't connected to the computer with sturdy hinges. I don't think it will last long. The outside of the monitor shows tons of fingerprints, and the glare is insane unless you have it open at just the right angle. Also, the color scheme significantly changes depending on the angle of the screen. (I have a little lenovo x120e netbook and it's screen size is thicker than this Asus one, making it much more protected for my mobile needs.)
Other thoughts: The left and right clicker buttons are already scratched up from just a few hours of use. It's a little disappointing to find this in a $600+ computer.. They could have used a much better material.Read more ›
In my search for a new laptop, I was looking for one that was in the 13in range, and had a dedicated graphics chip. For the most part, I trust Asus as a brand. Price was a consideration as well, and this one fit my budget. Personally, looks don't matter too much to me. If you want a beautiful laptop over anything else (this one isn't bad looking), then you should go to your nearest Apple store. That said, the back of display although metal, is prone to finger prints, much like any of the glossy surfaces on the device. As for sound, it is usually silent, unless you are playing a game or video. The fan seems a little loud for a current-era laptop, however when you think about what they are putting into the machine, you can start to understand why it does turn on. Fortunately, with the fan, the laptop doesn't get hot.
I love the keyboard, it is comfortable and easy to type on. I do have to get used to the position of the right hand shift key, along with arrows and paging keys. Coming from a standard keyboard, it will take a little while to get used to. The trackpad works well, along with the two finger scrolling. The texture of the trackpad is like running your fingers on finely scored metal. Some may not like that kind of feel.
Upon turning it on, I found that it has a fair amount of bloat-ware installed. However, every time I buy a computer, the first thing I do is download its drivers, and reformat. I urge the same for any computer you buy. Web browsing works well, and the angle you can see the screen works well for me. Gaming (I've tried Minecraft so far) works great for a laptop. I was pleasantly surprised at how fluid it ran, even in full screen. Google Earth worked well too. I will install more games to find out how well they run.Read more ›
I love this laptop and this is why... 1gb AUTO switchable graphics, that means no buttons no waiting, nothing. If I start up diablo 3, the Nvidia gpu will automatically take over, I don't even notice it. Processor is decent, i3, but dual core with HT. So really 4 cores. Oh and it doesn't get hot, even in passive cooling mode. <50C browsing internet (while writing this review). And to top it off, I paid 550 (laptop) + 115 (ssd) + 22 (ram) = 687. This laptop can out perform most laptops, and all apple macbooks
Upgrades that need/should be done!
Add 4gb ram. Only one slot is used. I ordered this: http://www.amazon.com/Corsair-DDR3-Laptop-Memory-CMSO4GX3M1A1333C9/dp/B002YU83YO
Add SSD. 99% of laptops have a bottleneck of the HDD. I chose: http://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Force-Series-2-5-Inch-Solid/dp/B005UBNN76
Not only does the SSD speed up the system like crazy. My boot time is under 10 seconds, takes longer to boot the BIOS than Windows... It also adds battery life!
That means I get 7-10 hours battery life. Never tried it without wifi. But I'm sure it would be 10+.
NO backlit keyboard... WHY?! All laptops should have a backlit keyboard! I would pay an extra $100 for it, and sacrifice 2 hours to have it... The keyboard could be turned on/off. So, get the message developers.
Power light is really bright. Nothing a marker can't fix.
Windows Index (out of 7.9):
Gaming Graphics: 6.4
Hard Drive: 7.9
Im assuming this is with the integrated graphics.. I can run Diablo 3 on Medium with no problem
