Now, my experience with this device has many contributing factors, including where I am located, time of day, and such that might give other individuals different results. I will provide my own opinion of service that I receive, but your results will vary.
I live in an area with 4g service. I have only used this device in my place of work, so I haven't had the time to test it in other locations within my city. When I first got this device, it would stay connected to 4g service all the time. Sometimes, I would be unable to connect to 4g service for hours on end. This happens even though I have not changed location. But 3g service has been a great backup, and has always had reliable service when I needed it.
Download speed are pretty good, both with 3g and 4g service. But uploads, especially over the 4g network, are really slow and should be avoided when possible. I have no clue why, but uploads over the 3g network complete faster than uploads over the 4g network.
The device itself is a decent and sturdy build, and is mostly warm to the touch when used for hours on end. I took off one star for the 4g disconnections I have had lately that drive my crazy attempting to reconnect and defaulting to the 3g connection instead. Overall, this device is reliable, but results are likely to vary.Read more ›
If you are thinking of using the modem on the Sprint-Virgin Mobile 3G network, you probably should forget it unless your testing has confirmed service is good where you are. In Northern Virginia, for example, 3G download speed is no better than for a dial-up modem, and often worse. So, on a 3G connection the modem is essentially useless.
In contrast, if you want to use the modem on Sprint-Clear-Virgin Mobile 4G WiMax network, you likely will be a happy camper and unable to notice any real difference from a cable connection. Page loads are snappy and videos are smooth. (But watch your byte count for those videos.) If you can get WiMax, Virgin Mobile's 10 Gb for $35 is probably the best deal you'll find for mobile data.
The Franklin Wireless software reports a connection speed that has no relation to actual activity. Use Sprint's SmartView software, or any web speed-test site, to ascertain the true speed.
Note that the Virgin Mobile U600 USB modem is different from the seemingly similar Sprint U600 USB modem. Among the key differences: The GPS chip has been removed or crippled.
Virgin Mobile's account management page is very good, both for monitoring data usage and paying for service.
The main problem with this device is Virgin Mobile. While it rides Sprint's network (which is usually mostly fine), it is clear Virgin Mobile has far over-subscribed the bandwidth allotted to them. Signal strength is regularly 4/4 bars, but foxnews.com takes 6 minutes to load. Speedtest.net will not even come up in time to select a server. The one time I did get it to load, I got a 600+ms ping, 0.02Mbps down, and 0.06Mbps up. Fortunately you will not have to concern yourself with contacting Support to clear up issues, there simply is none. There is however a 1-800 number answered by robots who say outlandish things. After telling the technician that I was unable to get online, I was told, "Get where you supposed to be".
If there is any other use for this item outside using Virgin Mobile's service or "Support" I would recommend buying it. Item arrived as described and has high-quality color documentation. Installation is a breeze unless you have Windows 8. Windows 8 is not currently supported and there is no statement that they are planning on supporting it on Virgin Mobile's bollocks Support Forum. I tested it with Windows 8 Pro and it flat-out does not detect the modem at all.
Dial-up was much better than this device on Virgin Mobile's network. I have tested it in multiple locations on multiple machines and devices to absolutely no avail. Even T-Mobile is much better than this.
Amazon should de-list this item to prevent being associated with an Internet Connection that doesn't even get to their own site.
I didn't get to test out the internet speeds with this device but I really liked the compactness and would've preferred it over the Overdrive Pro (which is 3x more expensive, much less compact than a USB stick, needs to be charged, and heats up quite a bit.) Not sure how well this device performs for Windows/Mac but I just wanted to report that it will not work at all for Chromebooks.

Works very well where you have good signal with Sprint, but when I moved to an area that is dominated by Verizon I had to switch. The cost of this device isn't justified.Published 16 months ago by Rebecca G.
