This unit surprised me in a number of ways. There were only a few minor drawbacks. First, the flashlight, although it gives a very widely dispersed light, it is still QUITE bright...even without a center spot. And in the lantern configuration, it is also VERY bright. The only drawback to the 'lantern' configuration is that there are some shadows in the light pattern due to the small vertical rods that are part of the unit's structure. I compared its flashlight and lantern aspects to its 'cousin' (which is distributed under a number of names such as K2 lantern, Lingo Travel lantern, etc.), and found this FLIP unit to be generally better. Of course, this FLIP unit has one more battery that the K2 Lingo lantern, and the FLIP unit does cost somewhat more. As for the simialrly designed K2/Lingo travel lantern, it will light an area nicely (as a lantern) WITHOUT being hung upside down (i.e. without being hung upside down from, lets say, the top center of a camping tent). To get the best lantern illumination from the FLIP unit, it should be suspended upside down (but they do give you a carabiner that easily attaches to the underside of the FLIP lantern). And the K2 Lingo lantern version gives a more flashlight-like beam, while the FLIP lantern's light is more like a wide area diffused flashlight...but still surprising bright even as widely diffused as it is. A minor drawback to the FLIP lantern is, just like the K2 Lingo lantern, it doesn't 'project' the flashlight beam very far...just 'wide'. However, the K2 Lingo/Travel version requires that you unscrew the top in order to turn it into a flashlight. But as the FLIP name implies, you just 'flip' a knob to do that.Read more ›

This quality light is well built and easily lights up a 15x20 room to at least see where you are going. Having a top notch Cree Q4 bulb is a large selling point as well.

Being able to flip or rotate the bulb itself and stop in any position actually allows the unit to be used for reading and or even a night light. Rotate the bulb 45 degrees for reading and 90 degrees for a night light. Plus bounce it off a wall or ceiling for other lighting effects as it has enough power to accommodate this.

A few others have mentioned it's not comfortable to carry as a flashlight for very long because of the diameter. I don't agree as it's the diameter of a soda can which is easily tolerable.

I actually prefer the AA's over D's, rechargeable or otherwise. Using AA Eneloops is a very satisfactory solution.

If 180 lumens is too bright as some have mentioned, simply rotate the bulb to dull it down to nightlight brightness, along with using the lower setting. Covering the unit with a plastic 1 gallon milk carton increases the effectiveness of the available light for those who want more brightness.

There are less expensive units available that look identical but they have a little cheaper Cree bulb. This light is built to last a lifetime with reasonable care, so the $29 price tag is justified. When a storm hits and you NEED that light to work flawlessly, buying a cheaper light that may or may not function is not prudent.

A very minor point, but the cool green color has the look of QUALITY.

As a minimalist camper (tent, NOT RV) and backpacker I'm always looking for small and light gear that is quality built. I also insist that everything I own that requires batteries run on AA cells so I only have to carry one size. This little lantern has great light out put at two levels and because when hung up most of the light shines down, not out, it's campground friendly by not annoying your neighbors. We hang one at each end of the table on a lantern hanger and they work just great. The cool color temperature of the LEDs seems to attract way fewer insects. After dinner, table games, and camp chores it comes inside the tent and hangs by it's included mini carabiner. We have even taken this on backpack trips. It's probably a bit heavy for long trips, at 10.3 ounces with batteries, but if you expect to be setting up a pack camp after dark this is a handy tool for a group trip where weight can be distributed for shared items. It well built, durable, and has actually replaced our much larger, heavier, fossil fuel burning gas and propane lanterns. This is all we carry now. There are two cautionary comments. Be VERY careful to align the base when screwing it on. I broke one by not having the battery holder aligned correctly, but super glue solved that problem. And take out the batteries when it's being stored because the little flashing battery indicator LED will drain a set of batteries.

I wanted to buy this little lantern after hurricane Sandy. Everyone that carried it locally was sold out and luckily I found it on Amazon. It's small, but it packs a punch in terms of light output. Bright! And the fact that you can hang them is great. I love that they're not big and bulky and take up space. I would even give these as gifts to people who go camping or trekking. The cost is more than a flashlight, but it puts out up to 185 Lumens depending on what setting you use and the battery life isn't that bad if you read what the manufacturer states. For me, I'd rather pay for this lantern than have to buy multiple flashlights or other battery operated lanterns that repeatedly use expensive big fat batteries.
