Cons: The first unit I received one of the threaded legs was machined poorly. I measured the threaded portion of the troublesome leg and it was .007" smaller than the other three. This may not seem like much but it left minimal surface area for the threads to engage and that one leg ended up being "wobbly" and finally stripped out the second time I assembled the unit. I returned it to Amazon for a replacement. Not easy to assemble. I had to experiment with a number of different methods to find an acceptable process to put the unit together reliably and efficiently. Heavy. The tube and components weigh at least 1.5 lbs. Does not work well at high heat temperatures. If you build a roaring fire and place this unit in the center and then place a heavy pot of water on the grill to heat don't expect it to hold up. The thin stainless steel grill rods will collapse under heavy heating when combined with a heavy weight.
Update: I received a replacement grill promptly from Amazon. And when I assembled it I discovered the exact same problem. One of the legs had poor threading and it immediately stripped out and was useless. Since I had not shipped the first unit back to Amazon yet, I was able to mix and match 4 good legs out of the 8 I had in hand and finally was able to put together a sturdy grill. I returned the two bad legs back to amazon with the first grill. If this breaks or warps like the others have warned I am done with this grill. Probably won't purchase again.
Pros: In an emergency situation, you could use this to cook a meal or use it as a weapon to defend yourself. It has a nice weight to it. There are two sticks that have hooked ends that you could use as a back up holdown spike for your tent.
Cons: If you are backpacking and are one of those lightweight fanatics, this thing is a little heavy. I had to sacrifice a lot of things in my luggage because I was exceeding the 40 lb weight limit with my check-in bag.
The weight is not ideal for backpacking, but aluminum or titanium just would not hold up to the heat as well. I did set it it up one time before hand, which definitely saved me a little time at the campsite.
I will use this again, unless I need to go ultralight.
The grill can be a little finicky to set up the first few times, but you get used to it. Also, the grill bars going across can bend, but they don't bend much and are pretty easily bent back.
This is really the only fairly priced compact grill solution that I have found and it comes in handy when you want to cook something over the fire. Great product!
Description of damage, one of the rods is bent and has crimps on the sides. It's still usable but cosmetic damage pretty ugly.
