I should point out that the object sensing seems to be short range, but I'll have to experiment with that. It does seem to be quite sensitive (object and ambient) to surrounding changes. But there appears to be some questions as to it's accuracy in sensing object temperatures. This might be due to the mounting and lack of a lens or other optical assistance....I'll have to read the datasheet a bit more and investigate the entire device family.
Overall it's been fun to play with and is likely to be suitable for "proof of concept" projects. And there there is a lot of good information out there on the MLX90614.
I wish the header was already soldered on, I would have given 5 stars instead of 4 if it was. If the seller/manufacture reads this I recommend a right angle header so it can stand perpendicular to the breadboard.
The only thing took me some time to figure out is that it's using SMBus instead of I2C, which means although MCC I2C lib can be used, the baud rate need to set to 100KHz only.
Plus, 4.7K pull-up resistor is needed instead of 1K. (No pull-up resistor is needed if WPU is enabled on SCL and SDA)
One more thing for PIC18Fs: I2C_MasterWrite() and I2C_MasterRead() in MCC lib will not work because of this sensor's reading format. You need to use I2C_MasterWriteTRBBuild(), I2C_MasterReadTRBBuild() and I2C_MasterTRBInsert() to talk to sensor.
BTW, the default I2C/SMbus ID for this sensor is 0x5A, save you some time of looking it in the manual!
