The flip buttons work and are kinda cool albeit a little gimmicky.
The camera is surprisingly decent quality. It works well in well lit conditions (i.e. daytime). I used the copter inside my house (bad idea) in relatively poor lighting and it was pretty grainy.
Battery life is only 10 minutes or so per battery but extra batteries are readily available on amazon. I bought 6 for $23 and it comes with a 6 bay charger. With the 2 it already comes with, that should give me 80 minutes or so of fly time.
I think this copter gives me the experience to learn how to fly for a low cost so I don't smash up my Phantom 3 should I choose to get one. It is also not a bad way to check your gutters without having to get the ladder out! (I tried including a video but Amazon downscales it so you can't see the quality for real).
One thing I suggest getting is an extension pole (I got one from Lowes for $40 that extends to 23 feet). I got mine stuck in a tree on it's maiden voyage about 45 feet up. I had to get a ladder out and use the extension pole to knock it down. I can see this happening a lot if you fly near trees and you are a newbie like me.
Only reason I am knocking it down 1 star is because the initial drone's camera didn't work and it took some time to get it all straightened out with the seller. However, all in all I think I'm pretty happy with it!
Update: Just lost it in a tree. It got too high and started drifting. I throttled down, but it just sailed away. It's about 90' up in a neighbor's tree. Was great while it lasted! With the protective rings it'll get caught in a tree easily; so KEEP IT LOW AROUND TREES!
Flying the drone is easy peasy, but if you need some guidance, you're in luck, because the instructions are actually pretty decent, and devoid of the usual incoherent errors. It has a headless function which means no matter which way the drone turns in flight, left is always left, and right is always right, etc, which makes flying in the direction you want simple and intuitive. The coolest flying feature is the return home function. So if this thing ever gets too far away or is beyond my ability to get it back, I can just hit the Home button and the drone automatically flies back to where it took off from. Cool!!
The flight adjustments do work quite well, and I'm actually able to hover this drone in place, and spin left or right on the spot. Very nice. The construction feels a bit flimsy, however, this also means it should withstand crashes and hard landings because the body has a lot of give. I'm also particularly fond of the enclosed propeller blades. The other drones I have both have exposed blades and this version feels like the blades would be better protected from damage, and accidental injury.
The remote itself has a decent LCD screen which includes a percentage throttle from 0-100%, which is a nice touch. There's also a button for regular and fast speeds, but I haven't really tried the fast speed yet as I'm not that confident in my piloting just yet. But cool to know it's there. The video camera doesn't work with a cell phone, but rather, records video onto a micro SD card, which is not included. I actually prefer this over cell phone recordings because I can focus on the flying instead of being distracted by my phone. You can shoot videos and pictures with a touch of a button.
Overall, this is a pretty awesome starter drone. Sure, it's not going to compete against more expensive ones, but for a straight out of the box good time on a budget, this thing is pretty awesome. Would make a great gift too and comes in a nice retail quality box.
I was given this free in exchange for an honest review.
