Fascinated by the unique synergy of nature and mechanics, UGears continues to explore the amazing world of automatons and presents its latest mechanical pet, the Butterfly model – a 3-D puzzle. The Butterfly is not a static stand model, but an animated kinetic sculpture. Each of its details is designed to make sure it fits its own place and plays its own part in the workings of this outstanding mechanism. Equipped with a rubber band motor, the mechanical automaton moves, imitating the flutter of a butterfly but with no external power source or batteries. As with every model in the UGears family, The Butterfly requires no glue or additional tools to assemble. You will build your new model out of ready-made parts (details) that come precisely precut in high quality natural plywood boards. Slightly pushed, the parts easily pop out of the board. The assembly is constructed by blocks: initially, the details must be put together to form smaller blocks that in their turn will compose the whole model. The process of assembly is described in a comprehensive step-by-step instruction manual with detailed color illustrations, in 11 languages (English, German, French, Polish, Spanish, Ukrainian, Russian, Japanese, Italian, Chinese, and Korean). The assembled model is 290mm х 550mm х 400mm in size and includes 161 parts.

The instructions are all pictures, but some are hard to understand what they want you to do. And unless you have great vision, make sure you have a magnifying glass to see the details in the pictures and the reference marks on the wood pieces.
It is amazing what they can do with CNC, and I appreciate the extra parts they include (even the wax and a small piece of sandpaper was in the kit). This really is a cool idea, and I appreciate the engineering that went into it. But, I probably wouldn't buy another. Again, some of it is my fault. Although I was a mechanic for over 30 years, and woodworker my whole life, so I kind of know what I am doing and how to make things work.
One suggestion may be that at particular points, they should direct you to a video about what it is supposed to do. Such as when you add the 'power' (the large rubber bands that are supposed to move the wings) - what should it do, etc. Checking this before you put it in the middle of the unit would maybe give you a chance to fix it.
Anyway, that's my two cents. I did enjoy assembling it, even if it will end up in the trash.

Would have loved to have seen it work as in the video . . . .
