The Ugreen 3.5mm Stereo jack Auxiliary Audio Y Splitter is supplied within a small square plain brown cardboard box with a white sleeve bearing product information securing the box. Inside the box the splitter is found sealed within an airtight clear plastic bag, with the only other contents being a Ugreen quality control certificate.
The exact length of the splitter, excluding the connectors is 21.3cm and the cable measures 2.85mm in diameter before the split and the two cables after the split each measure 2.4mm in diameter.
10.5cm down from the rear of the male 3.5mm connection jacket there is a 9.72mm long, 8.11mm wide reinforcer protecting the cable split. The length of each cable after the split is 9.82cm.
The 3.5mm male connector housing / jacket measures 6.41mm in diameter and 23.92mm in length (this includes a small section of cable reinforcement at the back). The 3.5mm female connector housing / jack measures 7.95mm in diameter and 28.22mm in length again including the small section of cable reinforcement.
The left, right and ground sections of the 3.5mm male connector and both female connectors are plated with 24k gold to reduce signal loss (gold is a far better conductor of heat and electricity than carbon based metals such as steel). The connector jackets are constructed from a single piece of aluminium that has a satin silver finish and Ugreen branding in white painted lettering.
At the back of the housing on all connectors is a short section of firm rubber that serves to act as reinforcement as it exits the back. All jackets are well constructed and extremely secure, so much so that disassembly is impossible without the use of tools.
The cable has a black PVC sleeve, it is kink free and has a good degree of flexibility (can be coiled in a 2" circle). The overall design is a little similar to the Fisual S-Flex mini 3.5mm range, although the Ugreen cable is a little more rigid and thicker. In terms of overall build quality to Ugreen splitter is comparable to that of Ibra Pro cables and I have no complaints about the build quality for the price of the cable.
The 3.5mm Male connector is a good fit in all devices that I have tested it with (numerous phones, tablets, over head headphones, Bluetooth speakers, laptops and cameras). The female connections, however appear to be slightly deeper than necessary, with everything testing with from a pair of earphones bundled with a phone to my AudioQuest Tower cables they all click and lock securely into the female connections but there is a small amount of play in the cable. (A connected cable slides in and out by about 1mm).
To properly test the splitter I spent some 20 to 30 minutes listening to a small section of a song, rewinding it and playing it back both with and without the splitter and then repeating with the next section and then the next etc. The track was Ain't Your Mama by Jenifer Lopez a 320kbps track played from a Toshiba S70-B10N laptop and the earphones were a £15 pair of wired in ear buds that I am in the middle of reviewing.
Given the price of the buds I didn't expect to notice any difference, but the fact is I did. Both with and without the splitter sounded ok, but without the splitter the track was much warmer and more exciting. With the splitter the audio not only sounded a little quieter the overall quality also suffered most notably with the earphones ability to handle lower frequencies.
At the end of this test I proceeded to play the song once again using the splitter and this time I started to mess about with the connection of the earphones to the splitter and the splitter to the laptop. I twisted and turned the connections and I manipulated the wires near the connection and at no point was there any interference of static noise (a sign of good quality construction).
The Ugreen splitter is not a directional cable (some audio cables are such as my AudioQuest Tower 3.5mm Male to Male cable) so the splitter can be used to link two devices to one speaker or pair of headphones or it can be used to link two speakers or headphones to one device. The intended use for this splitter after I have finished my review is so that my brother-in-law's sister can use it on her tablet so that both she and her husband can wear separate headphones when watching movies on it. (They travel a lot and her husband does not have his own tablet as he is a bit of a technophobe).
On a final note, I've read some reviews for this product with people claiming that when two pairs of earphones are connected to the splitter audio only comes out of one bud on each pair. I have tested to check this with 4 different sets of earphones and headphones, and each and every time two pairs are connected audio comes out of every single ear bud / cup. If you find it does not it is not by design.
Full disclosure, I was provided with a sample product in exchange for a fair and honest review. No attempt was made to influence my opinion and my review is my own thoughts based on the use of this item.
UPDATE: My my my. After mere DAYS of use, the covering of the cable has diminished into nothing. It still works but the fact that the glue wasn't hard enough to last a longer time then this is quite disappointing to be honest. It works nicely but it's not as beautiful as it was when I first received it. It's not an item to quietly boast about to your friends since the brand won't even stick on to the item. Disappointed but still usable.
Now the bad:
-The Audio Splitter does NOT work well with iOS operations.
-You cannot use functions built into headphones to control your MacBook!
-You need to use the keyboard to manually adjust volume, pick up calls, skip tracks in music, etc.
