The best feature of the ultimaker is the lightweight print head. The guide/motion system is very clever, and about as light as can be. That light weight means there are very few vibrations and low noise compared to other 3d printers.
The print bed is very nice heated glass, and stays consistently level. Although it is the weak link of the system, as it will start to shake as printing speeds increase, and is the limiting factory to the speed that this machine can print cleanly. At lower speeds or with simply shaped prints, this shaking does not exist at all.
Compared to the Wasp Delta I just received, this thing is slow and inaccurate. There are better printers out there, and this thing isn't cheap. But it is fantasticly quiet, smooth, and mindlessly simple. 5 stars.

for the prize I dont expect to do a lot of diy
I just recently got this 3D printer. It is everything I imagined it to be.
First, it is very high-speed, so you can easily print things.
Second, the software is super nice, high-quality, and can give you a lot of info on the print data.
Third, just by looking at the printer, you can see that it is very high-class. Aside from the price, it is a very good 3D printer and me and my dad have tons of fun with it. Also, when we got the 3D printer, we had no idea how to use it. Fortunately, the Ultimaker 2+ had instructions loaded onto it, and we were able to set up our printer and get a test print going in about 15 mins.
I love this 3D printer, and I hope to see more Ultimaker 3D printers in the future.
The stated resolution of 20um is good but know that your actual resolution depends more on how you print (speed, nozzle diameter, active cooling) and what you print (material). Printed look/finish also depend a lot on how you control the print and temperatures etc. 3D printing in general is not (yet) a set and forget business. You will have to develop your craftsmanship. And to be able to do so, you will need a fairly high degree of control over print settings and print execution. The slicer software is therefore quite important; Ultimaker uses the open source Cura slicer engine which is quite good and has many many settings to tweak. Although I do feel that it generally prints a bit on the slow side.
Another thing to look for when to select a printer is the forum/community - you are going to have questions and failures and you will need help. The ultimaker community is quite open and helpful (not to say others are not).
In my 6 months experience with this printer, I have found it to be a reliable performer and it has been tremendously helpful to produce prototype products that can be reviewed by clients. I have printed a variety of prints, with PLA, conductive PLA and Nylon materials. Some required a lot of tweaking (i.e., better understanding of the material) but I could get good prints in the end. The device is a join to work with.
That said, the only niggle I have is its start up routine; all printers will need to print a bit of material to get the old stuff out and get a solid line of material. Generally this means they print a single line somewhere outside the real print. The Ultimaker prints a bit of material without putting the head down i.e. it sort of oozes out and may or may not land on the bed. This often results into the starter material being dragged to the actual print and possibly being incorporated into it which results in silly looking blobs or worse. So every time a print start, I grab that starter material and cut it before it causes problems. This can be fixed by just a software change and for the life of me I don’t know why they haven’t done that yet. Still it is not a problem big enough for me to not recommend this printer.
