When Jane begins finding evidence hinting to her that her husband, Prince Gallant, may or may not be having an affair, Jane begins to lose it a little bit, and there is a constant threat of her Evil Queen persona bubbling back up to the surface. It is immensely enjoyable to read Jane's constant internal struggle, and it's reassuring to see that the writer hasn't lost her touch between writing Dewitched and its sequel. Jane is just as deep and likable as she was before. The humor from the first book is still present, complete with hilarious and awesome cameos from every fairy tale you can think of. The Paper Bag Princess also has a fairly big part in Unhitched, which took me by surprise. I had long forgotten that story until this book refreshed my memory. The serious and dramatic moments are just as affecting as Dewitched as well, with a particularly beautiful ending that I can pretty much guarantee will move you. Personally, I also greatly enjoyed the addition of this book's villain, Malevolence, the evil fairy from Sleeping Beauty. Though you don't see her too often, she is constantly mentioned and her presence is felt throughout the entire book.
There is a third book, Bewitched, coming out sometime next year, and I can't wait to get my hands on it! Going forward, I have a few questions that I hope to see answered in this third book. For example, I would love to find out more about Jane's evil mother, who is mentioned a lot throughout the series and has kind of become a recurring mystery. Until then, I highly recommend Unhitched, just as much as Dewitched! It's a fun, emotional ride through the reimagining of this classic character's life, and I'm so glad I discovered these books! I have both the Kindle edition and paperback copy of both books!
I really want another book to come out, so we can find out if Gothal and JAne are really sisters and how that happend!
