About the Author

Evi Nemeth has retired from the Computer Science faculty at the University of Colorado. She is currently exploring the Pacific on her 40-foot sailboat named Wonderland. Garth Snyder has worked at NeXT and Sun and holds a BS in Engineering from Swarthmore College and an MD and an MBA from the University of Rochester. Trent R. Hein is the co-founder of Applied Trust, a company that provides IT infrastructure consulting services. Trent holds a BS in Computer Science from the University of Colorado. Ben Whaley is the Director of Enterprise Architecture at Applied Trust. Ben earned a BS in Computer Science from the University of Colorado. He is an expert in storage management, virtualization, and web infrastructure.

Best Linux/UNIX Book I've Read. Ever.

There's a reason this book receives glowing reviews, and it doesn't have much to do with what's in it. It has to do with what's not in it.

I am so accustomed to really miserable, overly verbose tech writing by people who are clearly not good writers that finding this book blew me away. In an era of disposable and free blog writing, I forgot how good tech writing can be. We need more writing like this. I bought the paperback and the Kindle edition. First time, ever, that I bought a book twice. When they come out with a new edition, I'll buy that one, too. Another first.

Tech book publishers, take note of why this book works:

- There aren't equally-weighted discussions about every single option available.
- There's not a lot of BS filler.
- There's historical context which aids in memorization. Stories teach.
- There's a lot of "do this, here's why" aka "best practices".
- There aren't pages and pages of useless code that nobody cares about.
- There are no gimmicks (free CD/DVDs and the like) attached to the book.
- The writing style assumes you are busy and treats your time as valuable.

In this book is practical wisdom and tested/tried techniques to get you started on most things you will do as an admin. The authors know you have Google, and they don't kill you wasting your time. They give you a description of the technology, the most appropriate way(s) to handle it (with syntax), how to think about it, and how it differs (if it differs) between versions of Linux/UNIX.

Very Useful Book, Indispensible Admin Tool

The foreword to this volume is by Tim O'Reilly. In it he states that an earlier incarnation of this book, now in its fourth edition, served as the benchmark for what his own System Administration book would have to strive for in terms of content and accessibility.

I'm not a rabid consumer of O'Reilly books. Some of them are the best games in town, some not worth the paper etc. But in this case he is echoing my own sentiment with respect to the Unix and Linux System Administration Handbook (4th Edition).

This book teems with useful advice honed over four editions, more than 20 years of experience half a dozen different flavors of the "unix-like" operating systems available, from Solaris through a rainbow of Linux variants to AIX, the mutant elephant in the room.

The tone is not always agnostic, but if there are dissenting opinions to the view being expressed, they are presented and attributed. I like that approach a lot. Too much of the Sys Admin dialectic is needless (and all to often ranting) evangelism of this or that O/S rather than a cogent discussion of the matter at hand. Here, all voices are heard.

The range of subjects covered is, to these eyes, a definitive and complete set, making this book a swiss army knife for the Sys Admin.

The problem that I've had with most Linux/Unix Sys Administration books is the fact that they're either too easy (assume that you've never touched a command line and don't want to) or they teach the material in the most obfuscated/difficult to understand manner. This book is great! I've been a sys admin for around a year and a half and I've learned so much from this book. Unlike other books, it details the history of certain concepts to enforce the concept rather than just to provide you with a history lesson. Definitely pick this book up!

IMHO - This is THE admin book to own

I've been a big fan of the authors since the 2nd edition was released. I was kind of dissapointed when they split it into separate Unix-Linux books, especially because of the cost. Glad to see it's back into one large book for the 4th edition.

In my opinion, this is THE admin book to have for those who do this for a living. No unix/linux admin book will ever cover everything, especially since you have to decide if you want to be aimed at beginners or experienced admins, or try to include both. This series has always been for the experienced admins, and covers a TON of real-world issues in the world of unix-administration. They cover the main topics, the differences in major releases, and show you exactly where to go for more detailed information, if needed. Easy. And a great sense of humour throughout, like the LESS guy dumping the MORE coffin into the sea on the cover of the book.

The free on-line version is a great bonus, even if it is slightly flawed. Unfortunately, a page-by-page on-line version of an admin manual still isn't the best option. There needs to be a more interactive way to go back/forth to different topics, be able to view different pages at once, etc. For now, the paper format is still the best, as far as I'm concerned.

5 stars, period. If you have the 2nd edition, you MUST get the 4th. If you bought both the Unix and Linux versions of the 3rd, it could hurt a bit to spend another $XX for this edition, but it is worth it.

If you're a "professional" unix admin, I highly recommend looking at getting this book.

Its hard for me to find a book that speaks to an intermediate level, usually tech information is written for the total beginner or the super experienced, but this book does an excellent job at writing to the in between level. I love this book to use for reference and also to read cover to cover. Shocking as it may sound for a sys admin book, but its a hilarious and captivating book. I love the authors writing style and sense of humor. It makes it easy to read cover to cover without getting board. It is very well organized. Even in the age of the internet I actually find the information I am searching for in this handbook faster than searching the web.

This is generally a very comprehensive book on Unix, Linux and System Administration practices. I have adopted it as a textbook in "System Administration". However, much precious space in the book is spent with the fine details of: Solaris, HP-UX, IBM-AIX and particular Linux flavours, which can be too distracting, while talking too briefly about more important concepts (Why so long "Email" and "DNS" chapters, while a very brief subsection about "LDAP"?). I also think that more illustrations should be used (and no screenshots at all).
