Editorial Reviews

From the Author

As a child I never questioned why it was that I was born in Hong Kong and why my family lived in exotic places like India, Libya and Iran. It was just how it was and I loved the excitement of traveling to far away places, hearing different languages, eating local foods and exploring each new place we lived. Only later did I realize that I was actually the son of a British MI6 operative - a low level intelligence gatherer  - and only then did many aspects and events of our life become clear to me.

Then, as a young man, I joined the elite British Parachute Regiment. It was a way to provide a secure future for my family and in some far recess of my yet uninformed mind I thought it would be a continuation of my life of adventure. It was, but not in ways that I expected. Suffice it to say that after 8 years of service in different parts of the world, I left the army after two bloody tours in Northern Ireland with half my guts missing and have required numerous life saving operations since. Living with the reminder of hatred and war each day is a sobering and life changing experience.

AN UNQUIET AMERICAN is a semi-autobiographical novel, in that it draws on many of my life experiences and those of people close to me. Much of Rufus Reed's life experiences are like mine, though I must say he is a much more intriguing, intelligent, measured and likeable character than I could ever claim to be!   I can't deny that AN UNQUIET AMERICAN reflects my own strong beliefs, interpretation of history and conclusions about why our world is the way it is. I can't deny that I have a deep dislike and distrust of politicians who curtail our freedoms and try to rewrite history or determine its course to suit their own ends. I personally believe that power, greed and religious fervour cause most of the pain, anguish and conflict in the world and those negative experiences can be avoided, if we simply remember that we are one species and that what hurts one of us hurts us all.

I am also very much of an optimist at heart. I believe in the strength of the human spirit, in the power of love and still believe and hope that "good" will prevail over "evil". That optimism pervades the action and, I hope, the feeling that the reader is left with after all the twists and turns of the story. I just hope you enjoy reading it, as much as I enjoyed writing it!

This political thriller is superbly written and for much of it the reader could be forgiven for thinking he or she had picked up the latest from Le Carré. Certainly the main character, Rufus Read, is pure Le Carré. His toying with his captors is brilliantly written and his reminiscences packed with fascinating and very disturbing facts. As someone who has spent many years in Hong Kong, I can certainly attest to the accuracy of the parts of the book located there. As for the overall message regarding the manipulation of the US government, again, fascinating stuff well backed up with modern/historical fact. If you like thrillers with a difference, ones that make you think long and hard about the modern world, An Unquiet American is well worth reading.
I am very pleased to have discovered Tony Clarke's work (for the conspiracy theorists who think every 5Star review is a plant, he is, I should add, no relation!) and I shall certainly be reading more. All strength to twitter where I first came across his name.

AFN Clarke's book is terrific. In the vein of Arthur Hiller's "Catch 22", "An Unquiet American" not only conveys the horrors of imprisonment and its brutal tortures, but also the wry comedic wit of Rufus Reed, the protagonist. Not only does he - through his vast historic knowledge - change the minds of his captors, but he eventually saves them as well. The story has all of the intrigue of a "Bond" novel, villains taken from "today's headlines," and an insight into the political world that we are all suffering the repercussions from. I'd highly recommend it.

Not only is this book poorly edited, but the author knows little about American or Israeli politics. However, his ignorance does not stop him from endless diatribes against the evil and stupid leaders of both countries. At first I thought he was being satiric, so I persevered to the end. His baseless criticisms of President Bush and VP Cheney and all Republicans begin to wear thin after a while. In addition he constantly condemns Israel as an aggressor nation with no justification for its existence. And all his acrimonious charges are not backed up with even one fact. However, in the story his protagonist convinces all the evil Americans of his wisdom. In his biography he admits that this was a story that had to be told.

This masterpiece of psychological warfare exemplifies what happens when the tenets of Democracy are subjugated to the whims of those who bend the meaning of the Constitution to fit their twisted views of America's place in the world. While suffering the brutality of mental and physical torture at a CIA black ops site, Rufus Reed is able to turn the tables on his captors with superior intellect and an understanding of world affairs that forces his torturers to reevaluate the values and ethics of the "so-called" civilized world. AFN Clarke's superior storytelling encapsulates the horrors of the dark side of our Democracy with real world events that few authors could hope to capture. This is a must read!

I didn't choose one star because it uses the word "hate" and I don't use that word. This book is fiction and it's a good thing because this author is so biased I could never believe a thing he says. According to his view of the world, Republicans and conservatives and anyone who is religious the source of evil. It sites the erosion of the Constitution under several Republican presidents and the book ends with Obama getting elected. Salvation is at hand!!

How's the Constitution doing under Obama? The Constitution has suffered more assaults under Obama than all previous presidents put together. I wonder if the author's view has changed since then. I doubt it.

If the assault on conservatives wasn't bad enough the book is boring too. The main character is basically a reflection of the author's life which involved being born in the Orient and living in several places in the middle east and some military service as well. This could be an interesting tale but it's not, too much unnecessary detail. Ho hum. Don't waste your money.
