The machine was packed well and very easy to set up. An LCD screen that is pretty intuitive controls the printer. Software to drive from a PC or Mac it is included (by download) as is a 500 gram reel of ABS filament (it also works with PLA and other filaments).
Within less than an hour from opening our first model was finished. Wow I am impressed!
We are very pleased with the intuitive software which allows changing print variables to accommodate 3rd party filament (if you want to do that).
Print quality is very good and matches or beats some of the best.
What really amazed us was the feature whereby the printer can recover from a power interruption without losing the model being printed. Since I accidently tripped over the power cord and disconnected it, this proved very useful. Imagine if you have a power interruption 10 minutes before a four hour print job was to complete! Nice feature that can save the day. Apparently not even available on many high end printers.
Would have given it five stars except we struggled with the MAC software but it worked fine on a PC.
Very good value.
I had a question about the included software (which you download) so I called the vendor's 800 number. They quickly guided me to the place in the manual where it was explained. Really fantastic deal for the money. Highly recommended!
The printer is easy to use and can be up and running within 30mins from unpacking it.
If you run into any issues ordering or with your items from octave, I would highly suggest contacting Leviticus. He responds quickly and with clear and concise instructions on how to fix basic problems with this printer.
I’ve had a few different 3D printers and witnessed at least a hundred in operation at various events. I believe the UP mini 2 is the biggest bang for the buck I’ve seen yet. Tiertime didn’t cut corners here. The packaging is extremely durable and the unit includes a ton of extras – a full spool of filament, three filament samples, filament cutters, heat resistant gloves and a putty knife to aid in print removal.
The print head is detachable, which makes for easy nozzle cleaning. Access to the interior is much simpler than it looks. There are both front and back swinging doors and when the aluminum handle is raised, you can lift the top right off the enclosure without having to turn a screw. Speaking of the enclosure, it looks every bit as good on your desktop as it does in the pictures. Unlike a lot of 3D printers, it is no eyesore.
The HEPA filter was a bigger bonus than I expected. If you’ve 3D printed with ABS or PLA, you are familiar with the melting plastic odor and the visible particles floating around in the air. With this machine, it simply isn’t there. The HEPA filter sits under the print bed, draws the air from the build chamber down for filtration and releases the cleaned air back into the build chamber. This is far better than a filter system that blows the air out of the enclosure, because it allows the enclosure to build up internal heat, resulting in superb ABS prints with zero warping, even on larger jobs that use the entire build area. No curling, no warping, no layer separation. This is the first printer I’ve seen print ABS consistently and reliably that doesn’t have a Stratasys label.
Not all 3rd party filaments will fit in the external spool holder, but you can go to octave.com and download a printable external attachment that allows the printer to use any 3rd party filament. I did it and it worked great.
The print quality is better than any I’ve seen for a printer costing less than a thousand dollars. I personally think it’s better than most filament printers costing more than a thousand dollars (but less than five thousand).
Tiertime has been around a while and they know what they’re doing. I’ve always loved their software. It’s easier than any other I’ve used. Some people like generic open source software, which is fine if you want to play with a ton of settings until you get the machine printing how you like. But for my money, I’ll take UP Studio any day. It’s made specifically for Tiertime printers. It works well out of the box and doesn’t require you to understand a bunch of stuff you really shouldn’t have to know in order to turn your 3D model into a physical object.
Wi-Fi, untethered printing, touchscreen display, excellent print jobs, HEPA filtration, beautiful enclosure, six hundred bucks. I am very pleased with my purchase. The UP mini 2 really demonstrates how far personal 3D printing has come during the past few years. Granted, I've only got about 35 hours on it, but if it's anything like my old UP, it's going to be reliable for a long time to come.
Shortly after purchasing the printer, I received several Application software patches, and was able to resolve any issues I faced rapidly through their Customer Service representative named Brandon.
In summary I highly recommend the product.
