Playing this is cool. Bowser takes up A LOT of space but that makes him kinda cooler. The names of the pieces are on the bottom so you dont get confused which character does which move. The board is very simple and folds into 4. The pieces come in a molded flimsy plastic casing.

Getting them in and out will wear it down over time and crack and maybe cut your finger. I recommend throwing them both away and having the pieces loose in the tin case it comes in with the board.

I bought this as a gift. I'm glad I opened the box to check everything out before wrapping it. First even though the chess figures are really cute and brightly colored they reek of a very strong chemical smell. I would have just aired the game out a few days before wrapping it but the board itself had a tear in it right down the middle of the board. Thinking this was just a fluke I ordered another chess set. However, that board also had a tear in the center of the board. I believe this is due to how the board is made and because the material used to make the board is very cheap. It's too bad because the set is so cute but with the defective cheap material used for the board plus the song chemical smell I would not recommend this to anyone.

Good,sturdy, hard plastic pieces that my 7 year old son likes to play with as figures when not using them to learn to play chess. They are one inch across the bottom and range from 1.5 to approx 2.5 inches in height. Each has the name of the chess piece they represent on the edge of the bottom they stand on. Game comes in a metal box. The board is thin cardboard that folds into quarters and I could see it eventually wearing but pieces could be used on another chess board.

I bought this several years ago (2010 actually, according to Amazon!) so I feel I can speak to the quality of the product at this point. It's held up very well, with no pieces breaking or fading. Assuming you aren't giving this to a young child to drool, stab and otherwise abuse I don't see why it wouldn't last forever (and even then it still might, there are just no promises). The board feels like a standard chess board, not exceptionally strong (so if you have a kid who enjoys throwing things you might do well to have it laminated).

The board (quartered) and all pieces come in a metal box (pictured). My only minor complaint is that the pieces are housed in cheap black plastic that feels a little flimsy (though that's hardly a huge deal if you're careful).

The pieces themselves are well painted, with obvious attention paid to the small details (i.e., Bowser's spikes). The colors are vibrant (as any Mario themed item should be!). The set could easily be a display piece (my husband collects Mario products so that's what we've done with it). Mario and Bowser are the king pieces on their respective teams, while Luigi and Bowser Jr. serve as the queens (no, I don't understand why either).

Overall I'd highly recommend this to any Mario fan who might want to learn how to play chess. Or perhaps someone extra competitive who wants to stab their opponent in the eye with their king piece (Bowser is certainly capable of this).

We love this chess set! Honestly all the people in my house hold both large and small are geeks of one kind or another. We all game (except for the newborn of course) and we all love Super Mario Brothers. It is wonderful to go from a screen love to having a game that we can touch. We homeschool and so chess is a logical game great for learning. It is a bonus that these pieces are very well made, as is the board. It is a little more costly than most games but I have also purchased this game as a gift so I check back on it often looking for a good low price. One of the added bonuses to using a chess set like this is it helps kids memorize what characters serve what job on the board. I admit to having to ask my kids to remind me sometimes, they caught on to the piece movements for this set faster than I did. I think this game if kept intact could last many many years. I know my husband would love to play this with me and the kids in our golden years and I can so see that happening!

This product I must say is awesome. Though I only have two qualms with it. First off the pieces do not quite fit rite on the included board. I am going to have to make a board to dimension in order to properly utilise these pieces. Secondly, once the pieces are removed from their holders it is seemingly an act of congress to get the back in. Don't bother. Get a small segmented nuts & bolts box for the pieces as I did. They work perfectly. Other than that this is an altogether beautiful set for the price. A must have for anyone that's a fan of the Mario Brothers game series and a chess player that like the idea of novelty pieces.

Pictures don’t really do this one justice. I was not expecting much, just some dumb chess set with cheap figurines that would get my kid to play chess. Not the case at all! These figurines are great—all the pieces are really high quality plastic, even the pawns. The colors and detail are totally on point and my kids love em. Honestly you could play with them as toys if you wanted to (which they do). Well worth the price. The actual board is nothing special but who cares. And yes, this got my kid to play chess so mission accomplished.

My two grade-school age boys were really excited to get this Super Mario chess set. However, within the first two weeks of receiving it, one of Yoshi's arms has fallen off, the bow has come off of the top of Birdo's head, one of the coin pawns has come off of its base, and Bowser Jr's mohawk is long gone. In addition, the tin that the game comes in is quite malleable and is easy to scratch or dent. I do not feel like the boys have abused the game. Most of the damage to the pieces has been done taking them out or replacing them in their holders. This game seems only to be meant for collectors or teenagers, not for child's play. One of my sons says it is the "worst quality game ever."

7 year old son is Mario mad and when he saw this he just wanted it. I tried to put him off but 6 months later it was on the Christmas list. My kids like chess and they like Mario so I went with it.

Actually, it's great! The pieces say on the back what they are (rook, pawn, king etc) and after 10 minutes you get to know them. Only once did I get a piece taken by a bishop that I thought was a knight!

It has got the kids excited by playing chess and the pieces are well made. The board is a fold up thing and is a bit cheap but its ok. Is it worth the money? Maybe not but compared to so much other plastic tat the kids have this has real longevity so I am happy I got it.

This version comes in a tin box which is nice and strong and has a good closure (I'm not worried about it spontaneously popping open when stored on it's side, or moving it around like I am with some of the poorer cardboard game boxes). There is a window in the tin box which is cool when it's all packaged as it originally comes however the actual plastic inserts that hold all of the pieces in the box are too cumbersome to bother trying to get all the pieces back into them after you've played (and difficult to take out too, relatively) so I chucked the inserts and just used 4 sandwich bags to store the pieces together for MUCH easier set up and clean up, which of course makes that window on the box useless immediately.

The pieces/figures are of a high quality, dense and with good weight and overall nice detail. The painting on some of them is a little suspect but overall I feel like the quality of the pieces is more than good enough. It's a little confusing that on one side the Queen is Luigi instead of Peach, and it takes a little bit to remember what each character represents Chess wide however the base of each piece has the Chess piece name in relief on it so you can always refer to that when playing until you've got it down.

The board itself is a typical printed cardboard "board game board" and really isn't anything special. I felt like it could have been made to be thicker and stronger considering the cost of the set and this is the main reason for my subtracting a star.

I do feel like it's a little pricey in the end for what it is, however, I don't think you'll find a nicer quality mario themed chess set out there if you're buying for a mario fan.

Each figurine has its chess name written on its base, so it was easy to figure out the right place for each.
Unlike my husband and me, our kids remember well who is who during the game, but we find ourselves rereading the reminders again and again.
The figurines are very well made, just there are some paint streaks on some of them.
Considering the price (CDN$ 60.10 tax included) I expected the set to be perfect.
My boys enjoy their chess game even more now.
