USB 2.0 to IDE / SATA Converter Cable Saves the day and my Data

The last video was the best, no fooling around just a good serious instruction.

All of the above listed videos helped assure me that it was not difficult to extract data from old hard drives on dead computers: Computers that displayed the Blue Screen of Death once to often. I thought the problem was the hard drives but as it turned out the hard drives were good, which I found out by using these USB 2.0 to IDE / SATA Converter Cables. I was able to extract the data from my hard drives and migrate it over to my "My Book 1 TB external hard drive and then migrate the files as I wanted and/or needed them from my external drive to my new computers drive, which incidentally is now an Apple iMac. I'm relying on the Apple reputation for having a computer that lasts much longer, although all things created by man eventually crumble. But back to topic this set of cables did the job, power and data cables for the drives - I had both types IDE and SATA, and they are cheap enough to go ahead and give it a try. Probably save me a hundred or more dollars by doing it myself and not paying some X Spurt to do it for me. I thought I wrote this review before, but maybe it was for the seller and not Amazon

Ruined the Hard Drive

I purchased this item USB 2.0 to IDE / SATA Converter Cable Sold by: Eforcity via Amazon.com for $4.85 plus shipping.

I used the subject Converter to connect a Hitachi 1TB internal hard drive to my laptop. The hardrive was from my desktop PC and it contained all my data (backed up elsewhere than goodness). My desktop was down because I was replaceing a defective CPU cooler, and I wanted to be able to access all my data using my laptop in the mean time.

I received the unit which consisted of a power supply & cord, a SATA-to-USB module, and a SATA cable.
I hooked it all up and it worked great, EXCEPT the hard drive was running all the time and got very HOT, even when the laptop was sleeping and even though though it was under power management according to the laptop (Win 7 Toshiba Satellite).

Because of this I took to "ejecting" the drive using the windows utility, and then unplugging it when I didn't need to access it. Everything appeared to be fine, the access was surprisingly fast. HOWEVER, when I installed the drive back into my desktop, upon booting, the system boot program kept stopping and telling me that the drive was bad and in danger of immediate failure.

This 1TB drive is one of three data drives I have installed on my desktop, I rebooted the system over and over with only one data drive connected at a time, and the Hitachi 1TB is the only one that caused the message of bad drive. Since the drive was fine when I removed it from the desktop and was bad immediately after using the $4.85 Converter, I blame the subject $4.85 Converter (and myself for being so cheap) for trashing my hard drive that will now cost me $100 to replace (not gonna buy too cheap HDD!)

I was warned! I did read at least one Amazon review saying the subject Converter power supply fried several hard drives (dk if my problem is related), but since I am cheap and this stuff never happens to me, I went ahead and bought it, used it, and now regret it.

It works, but grudgingly...

The first many times I tried connecting both a working HDD and DVD ROM drive to my PC with these cables, it failed. I re-checked all the connections and tried again several times and finally the HDD was identified by Windows. But then I made the mistake of lightly bumping one of the cables and the connection was lost and the process started all over again (a few times before I put up caution tape around the PC).

So as long as the device/cables are used in a protective bubble, they will work great for you. If you don't have a bubble, be prepared for a lot of headaches as the device will be dropped by the OS (I tried with both Win 7 and 8) every time a stiff wind blows.

Ultimately, it did the job, but the road there was bumpy and fraught with peril.

- UPDATE (a few hours later) -

Buyer beware.

The power cord started smoking and actually melted near the outlet plug end (that's a new one). The adaptor box itself seems to be working fine, but the power cord must have had a short that could have burned my house own, had it not been on my desktop.

Oh, and after replacing the cord, this lovely piece of equipment still works only grudgingly. Not all all with the DVD ROM yet, but the HDD works most of the time now.

Cheap flexible tech support

This is a great tool for computer repair house calls. I've used this to recover data from drives without removing them from the tower. It's a lot of cabling, so keep all in a bag together, but it will get you conected to all standard consumer-grade drives.

This is not a good buy if you want to keep a drive permanantly connected outside of a computer. For that, buy an enclosure. This is more for tech support, repairs, and 'in a pinch' situations.

The molex power adapter should also work to test old case fans, lights, etc but I haven't gotten around to testing it.

One other thing to remember is that USB 2.0 will usually not be as fast as a direct ide or sata connection, but it's much more versatile and less invasive. If you need a faster connection, you can get a similar device with a USB 3 or eSATA connection, but they are much more expensive and eSATA is not always available (USB 3 is backwards compatible with USB 2, but you'd still be paying more for a speed boost you may or may not get).
