I've always been fascinated by various electronics and in my work as a SF game writer, I've had to come up with some strange and unusual technology for my fiction, and I always try to base my stuff on fact. A few years ago, I wrote up some fictional tech based on Tesla's broadcast energy theories and, as a result, became pretty interested in Tesla coils. Well, a Tesla coil's a little much to put on a desktop, but the plasma ball reminds me of it.

My wife bought this for me, I think partially as a joke gift. However, since I plugged it into my work monitor, I've had several compliments from co-workers and many stop by to see how the electrical discharges track along the surface to follow their touch. I've enjoyed using it as an "I'm in" light, too, turning it on when I come to work and turning it off when I leave the office.

The USB plug is a great feature; I just plugged it into my monitor. The added bonus is the little switch; I can leave it plugged in and turn it on or off as necessary; no plugging or unplugging. So far, so good.

This is a good plasma ball. It's small enough to not take up much room, but big enough to play with. If you get a USB AC adapter, it can plug into the wall.

This is exactly what it is reported to be. The negative reviews make it sound small. Well, it doesn't have a 12" diameter, but what do you expect if it is running on USB power. I was impressed that it could be 3-4" and work on USB power. Very cool.

Christmas gift for my 11 year old niece who Loves It. Also, every other member of our Family loved the Plasma Ball. I should have bought at least 3 more.

This is a cool desk toy and has stood up against a 2 1/2 year old (so far, a year without breaking). It is what it is though - a plasma ball. It doesn't do much, but it sure looks groovy.
