It seems a bit pricey, but it's the only lamp I've found that can really produce the amount of vitamin D a person needs with very reasonable session times. I like the fact that Dr. Holick (who wrote The UV Advantage and is a well-known vitamin D researcher) was involved in the lamp's development and recommends it. It's not fancy, but it works the way it's supposed to. The timer, although mechanical, is pretty accurate. The bulbs don't put out much heat (unlike like a tanning bed), and they're fluorescents, rather than the old style mercury type. The maximum recommended time of exposure is five minutes. For me, that amount of time begins to produce a very faint tingling feeling, so to be on the safe side, I stay below that for each particular exposure area (and always make sure I'm at least 15 inches away from the bulbs, per the instructions). After 6 months, using it several times per week, I have absolutely no tanning, but I do have good vitamin D levels. I usually put the lamp on a table, expose the front and then the back of my upper body, then put it on the floor and expose the fronts and backs of my legs. Be sure to wear the goggles to prevent eye damage!

The new fluorescent model still emits way too much UVA although it emits less UVC than the old mercury lamp model. After getting burnt for the first time with this new lamp after only 5 minutes (whereas the old mercury one never burnt me after even prolonged exposures) I've looked at the fluorescent lamp spectrum, and was shocked to find that most of the emission is in the UVA region, which causes skin cancer and skin aging. UVB will do the same, but if the lamp was truly a good vitamin D lamp with only UVB, unnecessary UV exposure and risk would be minimized and health effects could be maximized. I think it is a little sloppy with all the optics expertise in the world, and the fact that vitamin D deficiency is a major health problem worldwide, that a vitamin D lamps are not available with truly tailored emissions in the vitamin D producing UVB spectrum. I give two stars for the fact that Sperti is the only company I know trying to make product which can produce vitamin D sufficient to correct deficiencies. But, they should publish the full spectrum of their lamps and show that this is a real improvement with less UVA and more UVB and not just a cost-cutting strategy since fluorescent lamps are cheaper.

My blood test results for Vitamin D was an extremely low 7. After using the Sperti Lamp for 4 weeks everyday for 5 minutes, my Vitamin D blood test results were 19. I sunned for 5 weeks, but did not count the first week since it was less than 5 minutes. I have blonde hair, blue eyes, and basically fair skin, but have always tanned well. I have never burned or even turned pink with the Sperti because I rotate my body during the 5 minute sessions by exposing one area for basically 2.5 minutes, then turning to another area for 2.5 minutes. I make sure I am at least 15 inches from the lamp. If you want to increase your Vitamin D, and don't or can't take the supplements, this Sperti lamp is the answer. I will have my blood drawn/test again in 5 weeks and will update this post.

After reading The Vitamin D Solution by Dr Michael Holick (2010) I decided to get a Sperti lamp following Holick's recommendation of it. I live in the UK and, following extensive searching, I was unable to find a Sperti lamp supplier in my own country although another company was offering a similar product for approximately the same price. However, this similar product didn't seem as good so I ordered my Sperti all the way from Kentucky, USA. It incurred a hefty import tax but I was happy to pay this.

I believe the benefits of my Sperti lamp are as follows:

1. Robust and simple construction.
2. Easy to carry, set up, and use.
3. Each session only takes 5 minutes of your time.
4. Acceptable/reasonable price with no other costs other than electricity.
5. The potential to provide you with life changing health benefits.

(NB: Regarding this last point - If you haven't already done so, I really would recommend that you undertake your own research into some of the new thinking and studies on the importance of Vitamin D in maintaining good health.)

TOP TIP: When new, if you find that the bulbs fail to light up the first time then flick the On/Off switch 10 times in quick succession. After the second or third session they will light first time. A very helpful advisor at the company explained that this is a common issue with new bulbs.

UPDATE - April 2016

I am a shift worker and so I receive less natural daylight than the average person as a significant part of my time is spent trying to sleep during daylight hours.

The Sperti Vitamin D sunlamp is specially calibrated and designed to increase the body's vitamin D levels. Sperti lamps have been used almost exclusively in virtually all studies made to determine a method for increasing vitamin D levels equivalent to sunlight as opposed to the average 'sunlamp' people buy for tanning. For those with low vitamin D levels it is imperative for your health to increase them however the body does NOT process oral supplements the same way it processes vitamin D from sunlight. It is much safer and more natural to use the Sperti vitamin D lamp then vitamin D supplements. I already had a Del Sol model which is much smaller and I have produced more vitamin D using this larger lamp. It was worth the money to have it and I recommend it highly.
