When you need a pen refill buy the Fisher space pen refills, they're a little more expensive, but don't skip and blot.
So not only is this pen very well made and tough as nails, it comes backed by excellent customer service. You can't ask for better than that!
Ps. By the way, an earlier reviewer worried that when the pen point is retracted the two halves are only held together by two or three threads, which is true. However, the shank of the point end extends fully 1.7" into the cap end of the barrel and both halves are very rigid, so it's certainly not going to bend. If impact causes the threads to fail it will only jam the two halves together more tightly. The only way the threads could fail and cause the two halves of the pen to come apart would be if the two ends were pulled apart somehow, and I can't see that happening, so I wouldn't worry about structural failure of the pen under duress. Five Stars!
1. To hide the pen part you pretty much unscrew the base around it like, with a Normal pen you would turn it to have the pen retract but you just unscrew it till the pen is hidden (takes several rotations to hide the pen tip), which while not a huge deal it does lessen the "ease of use part when using the pen"
2. Goes with the pen tip and ease of hiding it, since it does take more effort to protect the pen tip I usually just set it down or even slide it back into my edc bag without doing it, within the first day of using it the tip looks like it's going to start leaking although it hasn't yet, but still waiting for the show to drop.
Still a solid pen but I wish I would have gotten something built to hide the pen tip either with a cap or retraction.
I did pick up some training on how to use a kubotan in my years of traveling and this pen is perfect. The perennial problem with a kubotan, is where do you store it, well in your pocket of choose, but which one, the one with all your keys in it or the one with your money.
The pen is as solid as a kubotan, but has one additional piece, the pocket clip. That is a pretty sturdy clip and will ensure that the pen will not fall out of any of your pockets, very useful since I'm out and about often and most times I need a pen, not a kubotan.
In my travels I have had occasion to use a kubotan, so far this year I haven't. It will certainly be interesting if a situation arises where I'm forced to use this pen as one.
