Top Customer Reviews
When it did arrive, the top (window breaker), was almost completely unscrewed. The clip is held in place by this piece so it was completely loose as well. The pen tip is on a spring and the base of the pen twists to use the pen and twists the opposite way to retract it back in. The first time I did this the entire bottom half of the pen unscrewed. This took no force whatsoever and should probably have been a little more difficult considering this is a "tactical" pen.
Upon tighten that bottom piece in attempt to actually keep the pen together in one piece, it snapped the internal "brass" piece that holds the ink-shaft. So for those who are thinking, "don't tighten it so much"....1) I didn't use much force. and 2) Keep in mind this pen was "supposed" to be able to break auto glass.
Haven't even used it to write with yet and it already has superglue holding it together. Didn't make much sense to return it since it would need to go back to China.
SHORT VERSION: At first blush, these look good.
INITIAL OBSERVATION: Be advised that there's no carbide insert glass breaker tip, which is no real surprise at this low price. Not a biggie for me as I carry a spring-loaded glass breaker as part of my standard load-out anyway.
Silver-gray finish appears to be painted and not anodized.
On the machined flat above the four bands of knurling (not shown in photo) pen is marked with two Chinese characters then 'LAIX (L) B2-R 071690'.
SOMEWHAT LESS SHORT VERSION: I wanted something substantial and hand-filling, and these certainly meet that requirement. Also wanted something that will not bend or break in the front chest pocket of my bib overalls when I'm doing chores in the barn or tending to the critters. Great big pocket clip holds the pen securely in place.
Will advise on durability once I have some track record with these.
It only takes a half turn of rotation to deploy the writing tip, and you can feel it lock into position. Several other reviewers stated that their pen 'broke' as soon as they took it apart, and I can see how they might think that.
*It takes six full turns to unscrew the barrel from the cap.
*Take care not to lose the small coil spring that sits in the barrel when you remove the ink cartridge. The spring may or may not come out with the cartridge. If you lose the spring, the pen won't work (ask me how I know this). Good news is that just about any standard ball-point pen spring will fit and restore function.
*To reassemble, the top of the ink cartridge MUST be seated in the internal sleeve in the cap. DO NOT just drop the ink cartridge into the barrel and screw the top back on - that WILL damage it. The writing tip will start to protrude about three turns into reassembly, and may damage the pen if you continue past this point.
*You can't just take it apart and throw it back together like you can with the cheap plastic gimme pens - you will break it.
As far as the actual tacticalness goes - if I'm down to using this pen as a defensive weapon, that means I'm having a really bad day, as I've run out of ammo for both guns, broken all three knives, snapped the handle off the Cold Steel Special Forces Shovel, and apparently mistakenly grabbed a couple of golf balls instead the V-40s when I got up and got dressed in the morning.
***UPDATE 13 AUG 16: Durability two thumbs up! First pen has held up just fine in daily use; other three are in reserve. It rides in the front chest pocket of my bib overalls and I make no effort to protect it or baby it as I engage in my daily farm and animal care chores. Finish has worn a little bit, but that's no surprise. It takes a beating and continues to work as advertised!
