Essential For Unifi Networks, Management Heart Of A Unifi Deployment. Outstanding User Interface
The cloud key is the central part of the Ubiquiti Unifi managed network system. Ubiquiti offers a cloud version of the Cloud Key, but I guess I'm old school and want to keep my management mostly in-house. I have used this with 2 clients. One was a couple of unifi switches and half a dozen access points spread across 2 networks connected via VPN. Setup was easy after actually reading instructions and watching a few YouTube videos. The next client was a 2 building wifi infrastructure setup. It had 24 unifi AC Pro access points, a 5 16 port unifi PoE switches and a 24 port unifi switch spread across 2 3 story buildings adjacent to each other. Setup was super easy after the first one and each access point was configured within minutes of setup. The cloud key is brilliant. It's PoE powered (or optionally via a AC adapter) and has a microSD slot which came with a card (for backups). The web interface and remote access capability facilitate management off-site. Device discovery works great and makes deployment so quick and easy. Monitoring lets you ID problems and overloaded access points. It's been a great troubleshooting tool. The cloud key is the management beating heart of a unifi network. One thing to be aware of: make a backup of your cloud key!!! I found that on 2 occasions cloud keys required a reset and restore after nasty power failures. It doesn't take a long time, so do and It could save your proverbial bacon. Oh yes, when you make changes make another backup.Going from more old-school network management to the beautifully integrated Unifi system was a bit of an adjustment and learning curve. Once I "got it" it's my first choice for installation with more than a couple of access points.

This device is a must if you run any Ubiquiti Unifi device. It is essentially a tiny always-on web server that runs the Unifi Controller software. Trust me, you'll need this. Don't be bothered with running the same (and free) software on a Windows PC. The PC version is very unstable, and it is hard to set up. As of this writing, the PC software does not work with JRE 9. I had to downgrade Java to version 8 on my Windows 10 PC. The PC software also requires manual opening up ports on Windows Firewall, but there is no documentation on which ports need to be opened. Even after much hassle to get it working, it will only run for a while before crashing. This device here, on the other hand, provides the same functionality, but it is plug-and-play. It is always on. Rock solid for a week since I started it up. It manages all of the Unifi devices on the same network. Since it is always on, it collects statistics of each device and connected client. For its price and what it does, it is a great value.

If you are thinking about getting this device then you are either in the Unifi camp (so get a cloud key already, jeez) or you are thinking about swapping over (you won't regret it, get a cloud key). I used to use the Unifi controller software installed on a laptop for network control/configuration, now a web browser on any machine within the network can do the job. This is a surprisingly big quality of life improvement. Even chromebooks work nicely.

Only one real issue came up - I was running the latest "beta" control software on the laptop. The controller runs the most recent stable release. As such, the controller couldn't just load the laptop's configuration backup file. So, I had to reconfigure from scratch. That was a slight pain, but a blessing in disguise because I redesigned the network while I was at it. The previous configuration had evolved. Now the network is designed fresh and ready to evolve from a cleaner state.

A complaint is that Ubiquiti's instructions seem to assume that the cloud key is part of a fresh network install. That's probably a bad assumption because so very many of us did the initial configuration on a PC/mac and are swapping over to the cloud key. The instructions should have a section on "adding to an existing network." That would have saved me many hours of my life.

I was using Unifi on a Windows PC and needed to restart the service every few days. I purchased this with a UBIQUITI POE-48-24W-G power adaptor and had it running with the configuration from the Windows setup in less than 2 hours. This is a perfect companion to a setup with UAP's. It is much easier to set up than the Windows software version.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome bit of kit if you don't want your PC running 24/7
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 15, 2018
Pattern: Cloud KeyVerified Purchase
Having recently started using Ubiquiti equipment, including an EdgeRouter X and 2 UniFi AC APs, this felt like an essential part of the Wireless set up and my next logical purchase.

I initially installed the UniFi controller software on my PC which was great for setting up the access points etc. but I didn't want to leave my PC running 24/7 just to capture usage statistics of my Wirelress network! I also can't say I was really a fan of having the UniFi controller software installed on my PC and I prefer if the management is on a dedicated device for networking equipment.

This UniFi Cloud Key has taken care of the management server issue by running a dedicated UniFi controller on what is essentially a mini PC. The device is very small and compact and seems to do the trick perfectly. It is a somewhat unusual design and doesn't really look like a network device, more like a small laptop charger.

The mini network cable that came with it wasn't particularly flexible if you wanted to tuck the Cloud Key out of the way. I suspect that cable would work better if you were connecting the Cloud Key to a UniFi Passive PoE switch. Mine is connected to a Cisco SG300-10 switch which it works perfectly with it and allows me to trunk various VLANs for my different SSIDs.

I have powered my UniFi Cloud Key using a USB cable connected to a Synology NAS and I've had no issues. The Cloud Key runs cool when connected via USB so perhaps it runs hot when connected via PoE (something other users have observed)?

It really feels that Ubiquiti are trying to get you to buy into the whole UniFi product range with the UniFi controller software. Despite me only having UniFi access points, all of the GUI options and pages are still enabled for the UniFi switches and Security Gateway which makes for a slightly cluttered and confusing interface. I just ignore all of those things and just use the WiFi part but it would be really good if I could turn off or hide the components I don't have!
