Better than XP

I have been Windows user since Windows 95 was introduced. With many other Windows users, I have experienced numerous strange lock-ups, freezes, crashes, and that infamous BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death). While Windows 2000 and XP were better, still re-installation of XP, applications, and drivers were painful. And overall usability was boring and not intuitive. Enter Ubuntu 6.10.

Since trying out its Live CD on my Toshiba Satellite notebook, I quickly installed it and it is now my default OS. And I LOVE it! The computing is now fun and productive. I recommend Ubuntu 6.10 for:

1. It is quick to install and it automatically partitions my XP drive without destroying any data or MBR in XP.

2. The desktop layout is elegant, simple and intuitive. Its appearance(themes, wallpaper, fonts) is customizable, flexible and has many choices.

3. Its file manager called, "Nautilus" is simply amazing. It is so easy to organize your files, you will not miss Windows at all. My productivity, using Ubuntu went up.

4. It comes with incredible array of applications: OpenOffice.org 2.0 (compatible with MS Office 97,2000,XP & 2003), Firefox 2.0 (best web browser), Thunderbird 1.5 (it is similar to Outlook Express). Plus you could download more applications through "Synaptic package manager" or "Add/Remove Applications" or even using "Automatix"

5. Overall, it is excellent alternative to Windows XP or Vista. Moreso, because it is FREE. It is FREE when you download it yourself and make an ISO image, or you could simply order FREE CD (Ubuntu 6.04 only and not 6.10) with FREE shipping.

However, fonts may not be to your liking initially, then you must fiddle it a little to work just right for your eyes. Downloading FREE MS core TrueType fonts will help. Now my Ubuntu fonts are sharp and smooth.

Also, Ubuntu 7.04 will be released next month (middle of April) -- this release has many updates (both in desktop environment & applications) and will be better than already excellent Ubuntu 6.10.

Ubuntu = Easy Linux!!!

I've been an all time Windows user, working with all Windows flavors from Windows 3.1 (oh, those days!) to the new resource-hungry Vista. My only previous experience with Linux was around year 2000 with RedHat, and back then I wasn't impressed. But Linux have changed a lot (evolved, really) since then.

Last month a friend of mine showed me Ubuntu, and I was intrigued enough to try it out on my home PC. I'm glad I did. Installation was smooth, fast, and even easier than installing Windows.

(BTW, the installer does not touch your Windows installation. It's smart enough to make room for the new OS in the HD and after installing and rebooting, you have the choice of booting up with Ubuntu or with Windows. It's called a dual-boot configuration. However a backup of your important files is in order, of course.)

And the Ubuntu OS is awesome! It can do everything Windows can in a fun, easy, powerful way. Ubuntu opened my eyes to the new Linux world, and it's a bright, fantastic world. For starters, it's great to be free of Antivirus / Antyspyware software slowing down my system. You can immediately start to browse the net, configure your e-mail client, add / remove software and install OS updates automatically (the Synaptic package manager is amazing, much better than Windows "Add/Remove Program" applet.) You have Office, CD/DVD Burner, Multimedia players, and instant access to thousand of software titles you can use for free. All of them can be installed/uninstalled in a second.

So now I find myself using MS Windows less and less. Ubuntu GUI (it's called GNOME) is so easy to use I might stop caring about Windows completely in the future. Admittedly, I am a computer savvy person, so for the average user I recommend reading the Ubuntu Guide and/or ordering the Ubuntu book here on Amazon. The Ubuntu guide it's oriented towards new users, clearly written, and it shows you how to do all sort of things in Ubuntu.

So... do you want to spend $10 on the Ubuntu DVD and get a speedy, powerful and fun OS, or $150 to $350 on Vista, a monster that will eat up your valuable PC resources for breakfast? The choice is clear.

Great operating system

I'll be up front about this, Ubuntu (or Linux in general) is still not quite there as far as being fully usable by the "general public." Yes, an average user could probably install this and get it going, and be able to surf, email, and chat. But there are so many other things that require light to heavy research on the net in order to get a handle on: get a Vista/OS X type eye-candy desktop, customize how your windows look, define global hotkeys, get those fancy desktop widgets/gadgets a la OS X/Vista, add support for DVD playback and DivX/Xvid playback, get Ubuntu to network/share files with Windows machines, and other tasks. Fortunately, the Ubuntu Forums are always hopping with activity 24/7, and help can usually be found there.

If you're computer savvy like me, Ubuntu is a great choice. If you plan on putting this on a computer to give to an "average user," however, it's probably best you set this up for them. Be prepared to take tech support calls once in a while though. ;)
