This is now one of my favorite UFC PPV's. This makes me want the UFC to go back to the no rules, no time limits other than the 30 minute that was actually fine. I highly recommend this

These early UFC videos are a real treasure. You get to see the UFC the way it was meant to be, not like it is today.

The superfight was a 35 minute fight nobody wanted to see. Ken did a great job of making this one of the worst UFC's. Ken is one of my all time greatest fighters, but if you dont want to fight dont get into the octagon.

UFC 5
RETURN OF THE BEAST
This was marked as the return of the beast as he was the heavy favorite to win the tournament since Royce Gracie would be fighting in the main event super fight. I remember watching this back in the day and thinking man this is the future right here, one day other people will like this as much as we do.
1.ANDY ANDERSON VS JON HESS-this fight is a slugfest right here and that includes when it goes to the ground. And although Andy looks like he might pull out an upset when they are on the ground he still comes up short. Big Jon Hess destroys Andy with some sick strikes and kicks, quick sloppy fight.4/5
2.TODD MEDINA VS LARRY GURETON-this fight is another quick one as it doesn't go too far into the fight. This is actually much better than most people think, both kind of know a decent amount of ground work and Todd makes Larry tap from a choke.4/5
3.OLEG TAKTAROV VS ERNEST VERDECIA-this is the UFC debut of the Russian Bear and let me tell you that this guy was very dangerous. Still the thing I remember most about him was when he got knocked out by Renzo Gracie [possibly my favorite KO ever]. This is another quick fight that to the untrained eye would have seen this and thought Ernest was winning. But Oleg reverses him slaps on a nice submission for the win.5/5
4.DAN SEVERN VS JOE CHARLES-another quick fight that sees Dan Severn dominate Joe and finish him after applying a sick rear naked choke. Severn was relentless trying to get the take down and controlling the fight. Another quick yet exciting fight.5/5
5.DAVE BENETEAU VS TODD MEDINA-Dave was replacing Jon Hess after Hess could not continue, so after he won an earlier match in 21 seconds he got the right to come into the tournament. Once again we are treated to another quick fight after Dave gets the take down and just basically beats on Todd. Todd's corner throws in the towel and gives Dave the win and the shot at the finals.5/5
6.OLEG TAKAROV VS DAN SEVERN-the longest fight of the night up till that point as Dan Severn pummels Oleg and bloodies him pretty bad. Strike after strike lands as Oleg tries and tries for an arm bar that he was not going to get. Big John steps in and stops the fight, therefore Severn moves on to the finals.5/5
7.KEN SHAMROCK VS ROYCE GRACIE-the first ever super fight in UFC history is a grudge match between these two warriors. Shamrock is trying to get back a loss he suffered to Royce at an earlier UFC. A lot of people think that this is a boring fight but I tend to disagree. These two are in a chess match waiting for the other to make a mistake, plus they do both work. Notice the little shots and kicks, and head buts that take place. Still if you don't like patience ground game this isn't for you. It ends in a draw when neither man could take the win. To me this is an excellent match and while neither went full out it was still an epic battle that ended the right way some say.4.5/5
8.DAVE BENETEAU VS DAN SEVERN-Another quick fight that sees Dan Severn take it to Dave as he is relentless as ever. After Dan gets the take down and lands in side control and hook in a key lock. This was an excellent showing for the beast as he dominated the tournament and won the belt, plus I love how he holds up the NWA title with the UFC belt.5/5
To me this was a great event as there was no boring fight in my eyes, plus there is a nice look back at the event.

With ferocity never quite seen before in the relatively short life of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC); wrestler Dan "the Beast" Severn steamrolled thru his first two opponents in UFC IV, placing him in the finals against the most decorated fighter in UFC history. His Greco-Roman skills were put to the test against Royce Gracie in a 15 minute battle. Unfortunately, for Severn the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu expert was able to secure a triangle choke forcing him to tap out. Fast forward 5 months later to the Independence Arena in Charlotte, North Carolina, where once again Severn would have an opportunity to win the UFC tournament. With experience on his side, he looked to take what he could not in the previous show.
Before UFC V, all UFC's centered on the main tournament. In this format, one fighter, Royce Gracie dominated all but one tournament in route to glory. Fresh off his latest tournament victory in UFC IV, Gracie was now asked to participate in only one fight dubbed the "Superfight". His opponent was a familiar foe, but eager to prove his skills in a rematch against the Brazilian. Ken Shamrock was back and finally got his rematch against Gracie, their bout would be scheduled for 30 minutes with a 5 minute over time period if needed.
The fighters involved in the main draw (tournament) were all for the most part rookies in MMA and the UFC.
Andy Anderson - A veteran of bare knuckle challenge matches who was short, but very bulky.
John Hess - A confident, agile, and serious big man ready to impose his style (SAFTA) on his opponents.
Larry Cureton - Another large fighter, who was a kickboxer.
Todd Medina - A religious man who listed "Jeet Kune Do" as his discipline. He was a big man first and foremost and was ready to win.
Oleg Taktarov - A Russian Sambo expert with experience in amateur competition. He looked on paper as a serious ground fighter.
Ernie Verdicia - The fighting Paramedic who was a Kempo stylist. He looked to use his fast hands to win.
Joe Charles - The "Ghetto Man" was back after a quick UFC IV fight. He was an expert in Judo.
Dan Severn - Decorated wrestler with experience (UFC IV) and redemption on his mind.
Dave Beneteau - Canadian wrestler with fast hands. He was very balanced for a fighter of his era.
The tournament would feature a rather large field of fighters of different disciplines. Still though, it was the fighters that knew how to fight on the ground that would separate themselves from the pack and emerge as threats. In this tournament an alternate would play a big role and a fight would be stopped due to blood. All in all, a good and rather quick tournament solidifying a place in history for the victor.
The first Superfight would be just that: Super. The fight was an epic in terms of time (36:00), but left many asking for more afterwards. Unfortunately, this fight would not produce a true winner.
