Blue Collar Hip-Hop

I heard this record unexpectedly on a YouTube crawl, and felt I just had to go out and buy it right afterwards to support the artists. It was the first hip-hop album I've heard in a long time that felt like I was hearing a fresh perspective.

Ugly Heroes is a trio consisting of MCs Verbal Kent and Red Pill, along with producer Apollo Brown. Brown's sound, as always, is straight from the early nineties, and I mean that in the best way. Ethereal strings, pianos, and soulful vocals, laid out over strong drums. It's an ideal backdrop for the album, which focuses on the struggles of two working-class MCs from Chicago and Detroit. Lyrics center around the hard realities of blue-collar life, such as working for slave wages, the rich getting richer, and looking for escape with a good woman or the bottle. It's a dark and unflinching album - the opening verse includes thoughts of suicide - making it more of a cerebral, listen-at-home record than something you blast in your car.

Kent and Pill are skilled lyrical technicians, but it's the subject matter that drew me in. It's one of those records you could recommend to a friend who "hates rap," because the typical hip-hop red flags - consumerism, wealth porn, misogyny, and celebrating gun violence - are nowhere to be found here. (There are a couple of tracks of lyrical boasting, but what's life without a little fun?) I especially liked 'Graves,' an anthem against the plutocracy, and 'Never Go,' a heartfelt song about how life on the road can take a heavy toll on families and friendships.

The album's only flaw is that it's a bit TOO consistent. I like that the record is just these three men, with no features or guest producers - it makes the project feel more personal - but Brown's production begins to feel a bit too familiar as the album goes along. It would have been nice to hear him step out of his comfort zone a few times and do some experimentation.

That said, this is an excellent album and deserves a lot more attention.

Great Album from Non-Mainstream group

This album will put a smile on your face if you like real hip-hop. This is an album that you have to really listen to to appreciate... that's lyrics... that's storytelling... and these guys are great at both. I got this album in June of 2013 and It's been in steady rotation every since. The beats are nice and slow and will keep you bobbing your head as you listen... however, the subject matter is a bit depressing as they talk about poverty and survival on most of the tracks... but that is real life for many... and that's where my roots are so I loved it. If you don't know poverty, you might not really get this album, but I love it.

Kudos to Ugly Heroes on a great project that should have gotten more attention.

Quality hip hop music.

This album is what hip hop really was meant to be. If you are looking for some turn up music or trap style music, then this album isn't for you. However, if you enjoy hard beats and real life lyrics, then this album is definitely for you. Both Verbal Kent and Red Pill compliment each other on each track, and Apollo Brown destroys "every" beat with hard hitting drums and sample heavy, but yet soulful sounds. This odd team of three actually work very well together. This type of hip hop will become more popular as things get worse around the world. We all are Ugly Heroes! Get this one.....

I just bought this album and let me just say, this is one of the best (if not the best) albums that I've heard this year. I'm a true hip hop head and I only listen to underground hip hop and I must say that this album is an absolute classic. Apollo Brown put together some serious hypnotizing beats and Verbal Kent and Red Pill put together some of the best verses of the year. If you love true hip hop then you will love this masterpiece. I'm listening to this album as I type my review! Underground Hip Hop Forever!

I really enjoyed the production and lyrics of this album. It had a new school style but some old school flavor to it. I'm assuming this is their debut in which case I'll be looking forward to future work, and recommend them to my friends. I can see this having a lot of crossover appeal.

The Deluxe vinyl version is the D-Lux Edition II (2xLP haze colored) NOT! the 2xLP teal, Album + 7in ltd teal.
No Digi code :/ (hopefully amazon adds it to autorip)

Haze colored is white in the center with a marble teal. Probably the left overs from Clouds and the 7in ltd teal mixed together.
