The extremely low quality stainless steel guides will absolutely not hold up to even occasional use. My wife fishes much less than I do, and hers (6ft 2 piece Medium) are showing grooves in 3 months and it will only be a couple more months before her guides are sharp enough to cut her line as well, and she has been using 8lb fluorocarbon line. This should absolutely not happen with even a basic low grade insert but Shakespeare Ugly stiks are using complete bottom of the barrel guides which can not hold up to even light use.
After paying $27 to have my tip replaced (on a $43.00 rod...) the others were grooved to the point where again, the line was too frayed to not snap when forming a knot. Completely unimpressed and disappointed. Get a quality rod with quality inserts or you'll be spending more, not even in the long term, but the short term...
The rod itself is still basically a flexible indestructible fiberglass rod, but with the guides being so soft and quick to groove, it doesn't matter how strong the rod is if your line frays the second it passes through.
Update: very durable rod. Have caught a number of nice sized fish to include Jack's, Snapper & Sharks. This rod handles them all with ease and hasn't even come close to breaking.
Another thing I love about this pole, and one reason I got it, is how lightweight it is! My reel is also ultralight, so the whole setup feels like you are holding basically nothing. Can cast all day! It's also nice to get around with. Easy to get through doors, into garage, etc. without hitting the ceiling or door frame.
Overall, really great rod! I put a picture in of one of the many bass I've caught on this pole. As you can see, it has no problem bringing in big fish!
The rod is of fine construction and the line guides did not come bent. I like the cork handles, so I am partial there. The handle is smooth but does not feel mushy like some cheap cork handled rods often do. I paired the rod with a 30 size Pflueger President with 10 lb test, again based on the popularity. Sorry, contrarians! Wow, a nice setup for about $110.00!
Anyhow, the reel seat and threads are nice so the reel sits pretty and sturdy. As for fishing, it does take a little getting used to setting the hook with an Ugly Stick, to me. I did miss a few bass, but that's probably my fault! I use this rod for weightless, split-shooting, shakey-head and wacky rigs. It casts quite well too.
This $50 rod has the classic Ugly Stick feel and holds its own against my Dobyns, Fenwick, and St. Croix spinning rods in the $80-$120 price range.
