the phillips end dooes not hold on to small screws easily. The square part in the center of the screwholder pushes the screw off the holder, as opposed to the older desigh where this part was tapered and held onto the screw easily.

Had one of these back 30 years ago when I worked in a garage. Now that my hands are getting old I have a hard time starting screws in tight places. This tool takes all that away and makes it possible to start screws and take them out all with just one hand regardless how type of spot they're in.

Not bad for the intended purpose. The piece does have a tendency to twist if just a little to much pressure is applied. My original set were steel and took a lot more punishment than this product but, overall not bad.

I had lost one of these for slotted pan head screws years ago. So I did some research and based upon the markings on my remaining tool found that the original one I had was an Ullman. The plastic handle version is for electrical work. They are very well crafted and reliable. Very handy to hold a screw to start the fastener in place. If you work by yourself and need an extra hand this tool helps. I now have two slotted and two phillips versions and the double sided metal pan/phillips version. Ullman has good quality. They are only available locally for me through a distributor who wasn't interested in my needs. Amazon had a good price and quick shipping. I am very pleased with the purchase and recommend them for every one's tool box. zoz

Great for starting screws in places you can't get your fingers to. Like having phillips and slotted on one tool.

First, it is not 6-3/4" long but 6-1/4 (packaging even says 6-1/4"). Half inch may not be much, but the longer size is what tipped me to buy this. I guess I can punt and use a piece of rubber hose to slightly extend the reach.

second, for Phillips screws, it should work fine for #1 and #2, but for #3-4, it won't because the tip is too small. Unfortunately, that is my present need. I'm sure it will work for other projects later.

Like many of the items on the website, the item description is only partially accurate. It IS 6-1/4" long, and no, it does not have a "Slender nylon body for easy access into close areas"- it's made mostly of aluminum.

The quality appears good, and I was delighted to see that it was made in the USA!

This screw starter works on the principle that the center section of the driver blade is spring loaded and free to rotate about 1/4 turn along the axis of the driver, thus gripping the sides of the slot. In use, the driver head is cocked by hand prior to engaging the screw. When the driver is pressed down against the screw head, the spring is released and the center section turns and engages the slot.

How well does it work? It appeared to be quite effective with most of the slotted screws I tried, but the blade is too wide for tiny screws. But I was unable to get it to work on any Phillips screw I tried. The problem was that the rotating center section turns into the cross slot and engages nothing. Perhaps I am using it incorrectly? No instructions were provided on the packaging.

Unfortunately, the online description does not say what size nuts this starter will handle. Turns out it grips from inside the threads and, on the package, says from sizes 4-40 to 5/16. I needed one for 2-56, so it does not work for me. The ones I have used in the past have always gripped from the outside and have been for the tiniest nuts, since they are hard to grip, independently of how difficult they are to position.

I was also disappointed that although I ordered two at the same time and they were shipped together in the same envelope, that I was charged 2x the $3.99 overnight fee. Somehow, I doubt FedEx received more for 1 than for 2.
