Editorial Reviews

Harry James led the most popular of all the Big Bands during most of the World War II years. The most famous trumpeter of the Swing Era, James struck a chord with the public in hit records, radio broadcasts and feature films through a unique mix of highly charged jazz instrumentals and sentimental pop numbers. His inventive arrangements showcased his expressive trumpet sound, while they created the perfect setting for the vocal talents of such singers as Frank Sinatra, Helen Forrest, Helen Ward and Dick Haymes.

Oh, come on! Harry James & his Orchestra recorded (and sold) tons of records for Brunswick and Columbia, and this is the best Sony Music could release? I'm aware that few masters exist in the vaults, but let's be real. There were two sides to Harry James, the sweet dance band leader and the jazz trumpeter. This collection is strictly schmaltz, and not all the better schmaltz, either. While the complete recordings of the James band featuring boy vocalist Frank Sinatra appear on another collection, Harry's other singers Helen Forrest (represented here by only two measly selections, and ones that aren't difficult to get elsewhere), Dick Haymes (represented by one track here), Buddy DeVito (not represented at all), Johnny McAfee (not represented at all) and Kitty Kallen (not even represented by "I'm Beginning to See the Light," her biggest hit with Harry) deserve better than what's offered in this lousy collection. Then, there's all the great instrumentals, such as "The Mole," "Ultra," "9:20 Special," "Flash," "B-19," "Strictly Instrumental," "Prince Charming," "Palladium Party," and "Cross Country Jump" to name but a few. I grew up in the rock n' roll era, but when I heard something that stirred me inside, I had to have it. Harry James did just that, many years after the Brunswick and Columbia sides were recorded. Sony's treatment of Harry's catalog is something of which the company should be ashamed. One of Sony's labels is called Legacy. Harry James is part of Sony's Legacy and deserves to be treated with some respect.
