"In this excellent, well-organized manual, Cory (Deck Designs) shares numerous, clear illustrations and detailed construction information and techniques. His confident, expert instruction, honed in his previous books on deck constructions, is apparent in the projects presented here."

Rebuilt a side porch this summer. This book provided a good overall instruction as to how to go about it but I would have preferred more detailed instructions for niche cases (such as restoring a hundred year old Victorian porch, as in my case. Would also be nice if it explained different flooring options, column options, and dealing with different foundation types)

If you're building a brand new porch, this book will be the only one you'd need however! Lots of neat ideas.

This book is a thorough overview for anyone interested in putting a porch on the house. I read a lot of home construction books and have significant building experience; when I read this book, I found the methods to be sound and the writing (and images) useful. The book covers framing, various styles, mixed materials, and different kinds of enclosures. If you're planning to put a porch on for the first time, definitely read this book!

I'm saying four stars instead of five because this book is very conventional without a whole lot of innovative ideas. That's fine if you're just looking to build a basic porch. But if you're looking for some clever, cool ideas, you should look to a few more books as well in order to make sure you like what you ultimately wind up with. Porches can do a lot for a house, extending inside into the outside; don't sell yourself short on your porch project!

Outstanding book! I have been looking quite a while for a well written and illustrated book on this subject. I can tell a lot of care was taken by the authors/illustrators to create a great book. They should be proud.

While there are step by step instructions to build a porch in this book, they are for an enclosed porch that looks more like a room addition than the porch pictured on the front of the book. There are some inspirational photos of pretty porches in the book, but if you are looking for a step by step on any of those you are out of luck. I learned some basic building techniques from this book but my husband didn't find it useful for the open porch structure we are building. I wish I could have borrowed this from someone instead of buying it.
