Miller wanted to own this compilation, which meant licensing pre-1973 recordings from Capitol, then licensing the resulting compilation BACK to Capitol. As a result, to reduce (to a minimum) the amount of songs that Miller would have to license from Capitol, most of the pre-1973 songs are reprsented by recent (2014-2017) re-makes, mostly concert recordings. Miller's voice is in amazing shape, undiminished by time, but these live versions of "Sugar Babe" & "Living in The U.S.A." lack the magic and distinctive production texture of the originals. If Miller felt compelled to include live versions, then why not include vintage live versions, recorded by the musicians who recorded the originals? Of the pre-1973 songs, only "The Joker", "Sha Ba Ba Du Ma Ma Ma", "My Dark Hour" , "Going to Mexico" & "Little Girl" are the original versions.
The packaging describes the demo version of "Take The Money and Run" as "Previously unreleased", but it isn't. It was released before, on the 30th Anniversary CD+DVD edition of "Fly Like an Eagle".
The version of "In The Midnight Hour" is an excellent, genuine vintage studio outtake(apparently from the "Fly Like an Eagle" sessions). Audiophiles won't be pleased by the very, very loud mastering of this Steve Miller Band compilation. At least, it isn't distorted. This is a preview of what the forthcoming Steve Miller Band expanded CD series will sound like. You may want to buy those new discs for whatever bonus tracks they may offer, but you'll want to hold onto your original CD's too.
If you are looking to get Steve Miller Band's ultimate hits, buy "Anthology" for the early songs, and one of his 1-CD hits collections for the hits from 1971 onwards.
