A major disadvantage of the physical format is that Minecraft is frequently updating, and this guide was written before 1.7 was released, so it’s already becoming out of date. Most of the sections in this book cover basic things, like making potions, going to the nether, how Redstone works, which are unlikely to be drastically modified, however who knows what Mojang will add or change in the future.
A few things really bothered me about this book. For starters, the Creeper on the cover is a bit unsettling. I understand that Mojang’s textures are copyright protected, however I’m sure a better compromise could have been found than what appears on the cover of this book. Also, there were numerous errors throughout the book that don’t make sense for someone who claims to have been interested in Minecraft as long as the author.Read more ›
It does a far better job of explaining things, and in simple language, than even the official manuals from Scholastic. (I found these manuals to be of high quality, and pretty cool, but very limited on their information. See my other reviews.)
After buying 5 other Minecraft guides and being disappointed or frustrated with each one, I was very pleased to discover this book. This is now the only Minecraft guide I use (outside of the online wiki), and the only one I need.
It is written very well to where most children should be able to comprehend it, but keep in mind that it is several hundred pages and quite comprehensive. This is probably not something most 10 year olds will be able to read through cover-to-cover...but hey, what do I know? These kids are so into Minecraft, I suppose anything is possible.
