This book...well, *tome* is more like it...is chock full of about a million recipes. It covers all the staples, and some food you wouldn't really think of as "southern" but where the ingredients/techniques add a distinct southern flair.
In terms of format, well, you have to think "Joy of Cooking." Illustrations/pictures are very sparse. On one hand this is welcomed, as there's no pressure to make my result look like the photo. On the other hand, well, I don't know what it's supposed to look like. The book is also on the large and thick side, making it a bit unwieldy to have open in the kitchen as you cook. It's a good idea to use your phone to snap a photo of the recipe you're using, if only to save some counter space.
The book itself covers some technical terms/equipment as well...seasoned cooks will find it redundant, however. As I'm not a seasoned cook, I appreciate having the information in here.
Overall, a big collection of largely bulletproof recipes. A very good book.
We have tried about 40 recipes in this book and usually pick out a new one once a month. We have yet to find one we don't like. Since it is Southern Living, the recipes are generally not too interested in the health of those consuming the delectable dishes, so they can be high in calories, fat, cholesterol and/or sodium. However, it is not difficult to use healthy alternatives (reduced sodium chick broth, for example) and there are a number of healthy dishes that they highlight throughout the text.
Overall, this is a winner, and as far as I can tell, it is no longer sold in stores, so if you have the opportunity to purchase one, do so quick. This is the perfect cookbook for someone learning to cook, someone learning to cook better, or even the working mother in need of some new, unique dinner ideas.
Then there are the wonderful recipes. The instructions are simply written, easy to follow, and consist of easy to find items. Most important, the dishes are deeeee-licious!
I also just got the 40 Years of Best Recipes and I have an old 1982 Southern Living Annual Recipes....I'm much obliged to you folks for supplying the things we need and love.
