Ultimate Toolbox is not the ultimate but it is worth getting

The Ultimate Toolbox is a resource that game masters of any fantasy-type rpg should consider picking up. While no supplement can cover everything, the Ultimate Toolbox covers enough aspects needed to enhance the creativity of any game master's world. The various entries are designed to be used straight away after generation on the tables or as inspirational material that takes very little work to fold into any ruleset/setting.

Some things I appreciate about the Ultimate Toolbox is the rumor generation and the NPC motivation tables. Rumors can lead to side quests or whole adventures, especially in urban settings. NPC motivations help to flesh out the personalities of the people that the player characters encounter. This means no more generic, bland NPCs that blend into the walls of the city or tavern, etc. Now the things that add flavor to encountering non-player characters can be determined quickly, instead of the GM fumbling to make up something interesting on the fly.

Various magical properties of items, names of persons and a whole host of the things that lend subtle depth to a fantasy world are easily generated with the Ultimate Toolbox. The chapter headings and index help the GM to find what they need quickly so that the game doesn't get bogged down by consulting a book.The Ultimate Toolbox is a great resource that can be used again and again. It never gets old.

Good for getting easy details and unsticking a writer's block

This book is full of a lot of good ideas that are great for un-sticking a writer's block or thinking up the small flavor details "for you" so you can get back to other plans. However EVERY table in the book is 20 lines long (to fit a D20) even when they have a hundred Ideas (they simply list 5 tables for them) This makes some tables feel cheaply fleshed out to hit 20, and some cumbersome to use when there's 4 or 5 tables. It'd be better if they just allowed variable length lists and offered Ideas/options for how to randomly select on your own.

AEG's Ultimate Toolbox is a huge compilation of idea generating tables divided into eight chapters. The first seven actual chapters are broken down into the categories of Character, World, Civilization, Maritime, Dungeon, Magic, and Plot. The last chapter is an appendix, primarily covering tables of names, with a few other odds and ends tossed in.

When I first started looking through this book, I was impressed by the many different tables provided. Sure, there's generally only twenty entries for each table, though some subjects received multiple tables (for instance book titles, which have five tables), but many are enough to spark all kinds of ideas to flesh out a game world.

Then I saw something that caught my eye. No, it wasn't a really interesting table that sparked my imagination, it looked like a repeat of a table I saw earlier in the book. I quickly flipped back to check, comparing the two tables, and found they were exactly identical. I felt disappointed, especially given the general way the tables were presented to give ideas.

You see, many of the tables generate a specific set of names for their contents. While this can be useful if you need to come up with something on the fly and don't want to do a lot of work for it, I really prefer more madlib-style random tables for creating names of people, places, and things. Being presented with a repeat of the same twenty fixed names from an earlier table was a big let-down in the potential utility of this product. Sure, the mix-and-match approach to random generation takes up more space than simple, fixed tables, but it also provides an exponential increase in the number of possibilities of results. Don't get me wrong, fixed tables do have their uses, but when you start repeating tables of fixed possibilities, you've wasted space that could have been taken up for new fixed possibilities.

After going through the material a bit more in-depth, I noticed that while several of the tables sparked my imagination, this somewhat repetitive approach with fixed tables made several of the tables less than useful. I found this was especially the case with the previously mentioned book titles tables, where it looked like they used an early version of someone's mix-and-match generator to just throw out some random (and often nonsensical) titles with the same group of nouns kept for all the books. A few other tables also seemed less than useful because of this approach (Continental Maps). Those looking for character names would also be advised to look somewhere else as well. Sure, the product covers a huge host of different cultural (and several racial) names, but it's more like a gigantic shotgun approach with lots of different stuff, but all fairly small portions.

On the technical side, this product is fairly well developed, few typos, decent artwork, a fairly useful index, and lots of information. I was even impressed that they kept the humor from the original Toolbox in here. Overall though, while this was a good resource (especially when you consider the price, roughly 40USD for 400 pages of material), it doesn't make the threshold of being a truly great product.

They have done it again! Bigger and better then 'Toolbox'. 'Ultimate Toolbox' is just that, the ultimate in game aids. Page after page of truly useful information good for any game system. No stat blocks or information that will become outdated. Don't just take my word - pick up your own copy.
