My husband took the door down, removed the knob, scrapped and cleaned it, and then filled the veneer gaps with spackling. We let it dry and proceeded to apply our new 'finish'. Contact paper can be tricky to use as it's VERY sticky, but my husband and I worked slowly and methodically, and got the door covered. It takes time, and you have to keep pulling it back up, and then smooth it back down (we used a large spatula). We did this until the door was covered from top to bottom with no air bubbles (it took two rows...the right side then the left...but the one roll of paper covered the front of the door).
The door looks great! The wood grain looks realistic, and you can't tell it's not the real thing unless you really look at it in the right light. We are so pleased with the results of our project, and the real wood look of the paper.
