This is NOT a gaming laptop, so I did not purchase this Zenbook with the expectation that it would run the latest games at the highest settings. I do own a slightly older Asus ROG G750 gaming laptop, which was great in its day; but I've since gotten back into console gaming, and was not gaming on the G750 any more it seemed.
I am a software developer by trade and do occasionally need to bring my personal laptop with me from time to time, whether it being during travel for work, or some other occassion; the G750 was just too big and too heavy to mess with bringing along.
So I was looking for something that at least kept me on par with the performance as the G750 but in a smaller form factor. This machine seemed to fit the bill, and from what I read in reviews here, and other reviews online; I was leaning heavily towards it. But I did check out other similar offerings from Dell, Lenovo, and HP; but I felt like the Asus offered similar (or better) specs than them, and was cheaper. So I pulled the trigger and bought this bad boy.
Initial windows set-up was smooth; but it wasnt long for things to take a turn. Another reviewer mentioned that there were issues with WiFi...even 2ft from the router. Well I was experiencing something similar. Even though it appeared I was connected to WiFi, I had no internet connection. Network Troubleshooter gave me the dreaded "Windows could not automatically detect the network's proxy settings...." error. So after several hours of online searching and trying various "fixes" and tutorials to sort, I wasnt having any luck.
I completely reset Windows, installed all updated firmware and drivers...nothing. I was close to returning this thing, as a reliable WiFi connection is a must. However, I am stubborn, and the problem solver on me couldnt stand to let this machine beat me...I had to figure it out. After a few more hours of racking my brain and troubleshooting, I stumbled on to what I thought was the issue. What was weird is that it seemed that sometimes, the WiFi worked great, then it seemed randomly it wouldnt. Well I discovered, what I thought was random, was a little more reproducable. I realized, I was only experiencing the WiFi issues when on battery power.
This helped to narrow my internet searching and troubleshooting. Most recommendations said to change the Power Management settings of the Network Adapter. One problem though...that option didnt exist for me; not from Device Manager, nor from Control Panel -> Power Management.
Now narrowing my search, led me to a guide that recommended editing the registry to enable those options. Well, after backing up my current registry, I made the change, rebooted the laptop, and like magic...the Power Mangement options were there, so I modified the Network Adapter settings to Max Performance on battery...and absolutely ZERO issues since then with WiFi connection and reliability.
IMHO, Asus should patch this somehow as I feel more consumers are going to purchase the laptop, experience these WiFi issues, and return the machine thinking its faulty when its really not. I'm sure they had things set the way they did, and Power Management disabled to eek out as much battery life as they could. But I personally think, the setting they have for Network Adapter on battery causes more problems than the slightly extra battery life its giving.
Pros: Great performance and specs for what you pay
Cons: Bad Network power management setting causing WiFi reliability issues, and as others have mentioned, it does attract a lot of finger prints.
Overall, I'm happy with the purchase and would give a solid recommendation to anyone looking for a high performance ultra book for a great price.
I'll update the review after I have more time/hands on with it...or if anything changes.
Pros: Powerful (1650 Max Q Model), Light, Amazing screen (really need to see it in person), great keyboard, battery life
Cons: Limited color selections, No USB-C charging, Screen only gets to 400 nits, fingerprint magnet, no touchscreen
I recommend looking at the above mentioned laptops and forming your own opinion, but overall Amazing laptop
1) Beautiful and large IPS 1080p screen
2) quality metal chassis
3) charges quickly
4) fast SSD
1) The worst trackpad on the market and has awful software for the trackpad screen functionality
2) Extremely Hot! Cooling is atrocious and has scalded my fingers/lap
3) Weird keyboard layout
4) Battery life not as advertised even on low power mode and with the brightness turned down I am averaging 3 hours while watching YouTube and movies
5) IR camera doesn't work well
6) Graphics card is terrible and does not allow you to play any games even when plugged in
