That being said my phone has an 1800mAh battery. Being that this battery is rated at 4500mAh, even after considering power lost to heat, and internal processes the bank has built in, it seemed reasonable for me to expect 2 charges. Sadly the Astro Slim2 delivered just a little over one.
Considering the quality, and thoughtful design, if you often find yourself out and about and away from a charger in your car or at home, this unit is still worth the money, and I'd still recommend it.
Anker responded to the negetive aspects of my review in a ridiculously fast manor, offering a replacement and seeming incredibly helpful, but I don't believe the item to be defective, still be of quite good quality, and am happy to have it. And now you can be sure the customer quality is impeccable. Again not a bad product if it's for you, but I can highly recommend Anker products in general, because they stand behind their products, and try to make sure their customers are happy.
Anker mailed me an unsolicited replacement just in case original unit was under-performing. After a few discharges I've come to the conclusion that the new unit is slightly outperforming the old. I am currently getting about one and one half charges, and suspect I may get a full two charges, if I were to completely shut my phone down during charging, but for what are probably fairly obvious reasons this isn't really practical. As stated earlier, the company has quality, affordable products with unbelievable customer service. If you're on the fence about purchasing a product the company offers, you should take their willingness to go above and beyond into consideration.
This is my fourth Anker battery purchase, so that's why I say this.
I bring these things around and my friends always end up borrowing them or commenting on how they need one so I just give them out as gifts.
Anyway, the older 3200mah slim allows you to charge the battery while charging your device. This does not.
Also, the way that the dongle thing plugs in is awkward and I would not be surprised if it stopped working after a few months of use. You have to forcibly pull the dongle out which can lead to you pulling on the entire wire thing (which I have done). I mean, it seems sturdy, but just also another point where it can break.
Also, sticking the dongle back into it's port is awkward. Not quick and easy like the jumper cable type of design with the 3200mah slim battery.
Some pros to this is that it seems Anker has stepped their game up on the USB adapaters. They're much more sleek and don't have unnecessary parts like the adapters that come with the 3200mah slim.
I can make a video review for this showing the differences between the two batteries if someone is interested to more clearly show what I mean, but even though I love Anker products, this one just seems not well thought out.
EDIT/UPDATE: all I have to say is that Anker's customer service is top notch. They contacted me, sent me the older model that I'm referencing above, refunded the difference for the product, and paid for return shipping. They even had to ship it out twice bc USPS lost the original shipment. If you're talking retail, Anker is basically out about $50 just to make sure I was happy. And honestly, they didn't have to do any of it. Even though I wasn't impressed with this product, I was OK with it and would have been fine without the replacement.
You have made me a customer for life Anker. I'm still going to leave this at 4 stars as I truly believe this product is not well thought out, but to each his own.
Going to Disney World? On a cruise? Other vacation or experience where you'll need your cell phone to work all day without access to a charging outlet? There are times when having an external battery or two is vital. I bought a lipstick style external battery at the Atlanta airport Brookstone store about a year ago. Bad experience. That external battery was poorly constructed, would not make a reliable connection, and charged exceedingly slowly. I put my phone into airplane mode to minimize its power consumption and still had to limp carefully to be able to get photos throughout the day while infrequently checking for messages or missed calls. For much of the time I had my phone and battery in my backpack carefully settled so it would hopefully keep charging without losing the connection. So I didn't always have it available immediately for photo opportunities.
For our next trip I didn't want to take a chance on another lipstick style battery, so I got two Anker Astro Slim2 4500mAh batteries. They seemed perfect. A built in short micro-USB cable plus another USB port to charge another device at the same time. Flat, fits in my pocket back to back with the phone. But there was a rather significant problem. It is not compatible with my LG G2. I still don't know what makes my phone special for that charger, but I ended up having to use the 2nd port with a separate USB cable which frequently also did work on my phone. I limped along with it and managed to get through a cruise in airplane mode, using the phone just for photos.
This Anker battery has a rating of 4500mAh. In my tests this Anker battery actually delivered about 63% of its rated capacity. I had the same experience later with another vendor's external battery (even the same lower actual % of rated capacity). It makes me wonder how accurate the ratings are for other vendors. I'm not excusing spec "exaggeration," just recognizing it is done and that ideal conditions are not real-world conditions. If my LG G2 battery capacity is similarly exaggerated, then the actual capacity of this battery would be even worse. Consider my results as a baseline for the number of batteries you think you will need and then test to see the actual mAh rating you get.
But don't assume that it will be compatible with your phone. I have no problem with any of the a/c or car chargers working with my LG G2. If it actually worked for me I would have given this product four stars.
Later: I received an explanation from Anker about the specified battery capacity rating: "kindly be advised approximately 30% of the Astro's battery capacity is unable to be used because of efficiency problems that affect all electronics devices. These include power lost from circuit heat and voltage conversions from the battery, the charging cable and your device. Please be assured that our efficiency rate is 5% higher than the industry average of 65% and is therefore able to supply 70% power to other devices." -- This is such a significant efficiency loss that I think it should be disclosed. It could be done in a way that points out that this applies to all external batteries on the market. I think the end result, avoiding the kind of confusion and disappointment I felt at the reality of the battery's effective capacity, would be positive PR for Anker.
I am getting a different model that is compatible with my phone, the Anker 2nd Gen Astro 6400mAh. I will report on it in a separate review.
