It’s time for a new generation of Ultraman!

Decades ago, a being known as the Giant of Light joined together with Shin Hayata of the Science Special Search Party to save Earth from an invasion of terrifying monsters called Kaiju. Now, many years later, those dark days are fading into memory, and the world is at peace. But in the shadows a new threat is growing, a danger that can only be faced by a new kind of hero—a new kind of Ultraman…

Shinjiro is an ordinary teenager, but his father is the legendary Shin Hayata. When he learns that his father passed on the “Ultraman Factor” to him and that he possesses incredible powers, nothing will ever be the same again.

This manga has an interesting unique twist added to the typical "Kaiju/human vs. Robots" feeling, but rather has a being instead combing with it's human host to save Earth from evil, it gives certain Megaman vibes to it too. The pages are of good quality and the illustrations are well-done. The colored pages are also beautiful, and the details for the Ultraman suit on each page are beautifully done; and inked awesomely too. The action sequences are in order too, and I'd recommend anyone who likes Pacific Rim (2012) read this manga. It certainly kicks ass, and in between I wanted to rank it as I like/love it.

I’ll be honest, I’ve never seen a single episode of the original Ultraman, and I wasn’t familiar with it other than some vague notions of it being something about a giant Power Ranger style dude fighting cheap rubber monsters. I just bought this because I thought the suit looked pretty cool. Well, the suit is indeed cool, but, more importantly, this first volume is phenomenal. The action is insanely well-drawn, and it impressed me enough that I’m already buying the next two volumes. Do yourself a favor and check out at least this first volume.

I'm actually not at all familiar with the Ultraman franchise but I do like manga, so I decided to give this a try. There's enough backstory for those unfamiliar with the franchise so you're not left hanging, and later the story picks up to the son of the previous Ultraman as a sort of "coming of age" thing where he gets the torch passed onto him and he deals with his powers and how to use them constructively. It's still the beginning so there's still room to grow and change but at this point the opening after the time skip seems a bit generic.

This is a good action book that continues from where the original Ultraman tv series picked up, but doesn't have a ton in common with that series - there aren't any giant monsters or growing to extreme sizes to fight said monsters. Instead, we're treated to something closer to what you'll find in Kamen Rider or Metal Heroes - somebody with super powers wears a powered suit in order to fight another human-sized monster. Not that that's a bad thing, but if you're picking this book up in hopes of finding awesome city-demolishing daikaiju action, you won't get it here. Perhaps this will be remedied in future issues, but so far there is none.

The plot is enjoyable, with cool little nods and references to the old series, but is easily understood if you've never watched Ultraman. It offers a nice set up for potential future storylines, and I can see this becoming something very enjoyable in the future. The art is good, though a bit hard to tell exactly what is going on at times. Overall, a solid and fun book with potential to do really cool things in the future.

Growing up, I watched Ultraman films on VHS. My aunt even made me an Ultraman costume one year at Halloween because Ultraman wasn't popular enough in the states to find a costume. That being said, since those days, Ultraman has seen some changes and iterations that many young and old fans of Ultraman from the past may not have enjoyed. This is not one of those iterations. This Ultraman story picks up from the original story and develops in a way that it has been some long time since we've seen Ultraman and now he's needed again.

Also worth noting, this is categorized as manga and the book reads that way, but even includes a short tutorial on how to read it (if you open the book up from the wrong side... but if you read it correctly, you won't see the tutorial until the end).

Must-have for all Ultraman fans and a very easy to read and comprehend book for first-time manga readers.

Picking up years after the original Ultraman series (yes, the 1960's one) we find Hiyata and the Science Patrol has retired and have been living in peace. Hiyata now has a son named Shinjiro and lives a simple life without the title of Ultraman, however, trouble begins to brew over the once peaceful nation of Japan... !

This was a fun read, defintely recommend this to any Ultra-fan or even if you want a new manga to read, check this one out!

A great start to a manga adaption of a classic Japanese hero with a rich history and lore from his own TV show. Its no problem if you don't know a thing about the Ultraman television series or any other related media, this first volume introduces elements and characters you need to know in a fresh new take similar to a reboot. Highly recommended reading for both old and new fans alike.

This was a Christmas present to my brother who watched the original Japanese series on Radio-Canada when he was young. It's not the exact Ultraman of the '60s. It's still a fun read.

I just finished the original Ultraman TV Series and wanted to check out this Manga before watching the Netflix Anime adaptation which covers volumes 1-8. This is a great sequel to the original series but you don't have to have seen the Original TV Show although it does help for returning characters and franchise mythology the book explains enough to get you started. This first volume is fast paced and doesn't mess about. It gave me vibes of Guyver and Iron Man too. I enjoyed it, onto volume 2.
