PRO550 Professional Headphones
The PRO 550 headphones from Ultrasone provide professional-quality audio in a lightweight and comfortable design. The headphones can fold down into the included hard case, which also has room for storing accessories. The headphones are fully adjustable, and have comfortable around-ear speed-switch earpads. A spare pair of earpads are included.
The headphones use large 50 millimeter Mylar drivers to provide smooth, natural sound with a wide frequency response that offers deep bass and crisp treble, ideal for tracking bassists and drummers. The headphones use Ultrasone's proprietary S-Logic Natural Surround Sound technology to provide a realistic soundscape, creating the impression that you're listening to high-quality speakers that are actually several feet away. This technology also produces the same perceived volume levels at a lower dB rating, allowing you to set the volume on your player a bit lower.
Other great features of the PRO 550 include MU metal shielding, which reduces radiation emission by up to 98 percent compared to other similar headphones on the market. This is an excellent feature for users who spend a great deal of time using headphones. The headphones include two single-sided detachable cables; one straight and one coiled. Each cord has a standard 1/4 inch stereo plug, and a 3.5 millimeter mini adapter is included.

Let's start out with something basic. How about build and appearance?
Opening the box to the Pro 900 is a bit of a surprise. All I can say is, they look smaller in the pictures! Despite their relatively big earcups, they are lightweight, yet sturdy. Even though the headphone is entirely made of plastic, this is not the type of plastic that people will fear of breaking or cracking. This is the tough stuff. I have absolutely no worries about it getting broken or damaged in the happenings of an accident. Everything looks and feels great, including the headband adjustment mechanism, which slides easily and stays where you want it to. The headband itself is made of a more rubbery material that just feels great! No worries, no complaints. Nice simplistic design.
But build and appearance are factors that carry little weight during critique. So now, we'll move onto an overlooked category that carries a significant amount of weight when judging a headphone. The comfort.
I honestly thought these things would be uncomfortable before I bought them, but that turned out to be proven false when first placed on my head. Even after half an hour passed, I'm still quite impressed with how well these feel.Read more ›
Let's get another thing out of the way... when you first get these, they'll sound TERRIBLE. For 99% of headphones out there, 'burn-in' is just a myth perpetuated by audiophiles that buy $1500 HDMI cables. But these will sound extremely harsh and uneven for the first 70-100 hours of use. Like, worse than apple earbuds. That's OK. By around 100 hours the sound will completely transform and the harsh treble will recede a great deal. By 300 hours, these will stabilize and you'll get the final sound. TL;DR play music through these for a minimum of 100 hours before making a judgement on them.
After the burn in... play your favorite tracks through these and prepare to have your mind blown. People talk about the bass on these headphones like it's something magical. It is. This is not a 'boomy' ghetto-blaster type of bass. It's a ridiculously detailed low-end that breathes life into everything including cello, electric guitar, and bass synth. That said... where it really stands out is when playing techno/house/trance. The sound quality you'll get through these headphones will remind you of a high-end club with a Funktion One sound system.
What about the high end? After burn-in (did I mention how crucial it is with these cans?) it has settled to a pleasant but 'active' behavior. It's extremely detailed but sometimes too exaggerated (which can lead to mild sibilance with 's' sounds in certain songs).Read more ›
Despite the unusual name (I thought Ultrasone was a Japanese company) Ultrasone is a German company, with their products engineered in Germany. As such, it has the typical attention to detail that the other German and Austrian brands like AKG, Senneheiser and Beyerdyamics have.
*Outstanding construction - simply put, these are built like a tank. Very solid and well constructed, but not heavy.
*Super Comfortable - For a full over the ear headphones, these are remarkably comfortable - even out of the box. The ear pads are large, but fit well. The head band is snug, but not uncomfortable and doesn't mash the speakers against your head and ears. I can easily wear the 750 for extended periods without repositioning constantly to find a comfortable fit. The velour ear pads keep your ears cooler than the leather/pleather covering often used in ear pads by other manufacturers.
*Remarkable sound - I was totally blown away by the Pro 750's on my first listen using my Denon receiver and Onkyo CD player. The bass is deep and rich, but not intrusive. Where the 750's excel is in the mid-range and treble. The clarity and crispness is amazing, with vocal presentations very forward and bright. Others criticize the 750's as being "too bright" in comparison to the 900's. I did not find that the case at all. The 750 is very lively and fun to listen to with your favorite music. It also has an amazing wide soundstage and never feels constricted sonically.Read more ›
